On Monday the national teams of the Netherlands and Iceland will face off in a friendly match.
The Dutch team looks splendid on their home soil and scores lots of goals. In their last five matches, they only lost to Germany (1:2), but previously thrashed Scotland (4:0) and a few days ago, Canada (4:0). Yes, in the first half against Canada, the Oranje fans had to be nervous, but after Depay’s goal, the team caught their stride and saw it through to the end.
The Vikings sensationally defeated England at Wembley (1:0), but I’d say it was more due to the English side, who essentially created only one scoring chance in 90 minutes. Three Lions fans started to leave the stands en masse, and I fully understand them. The Icelandic team played it cool and deservedly won, but it’s unlikely they will repeat this success against the Netherlands.
Since 2014, the teams have met each other twice in the Euro qualifiers, and here the statistics are far from favouring the hosts. Iceland won both matches (1:0, 2:0).
An excellent opportunity for the Dutch to take revenge for past encounters and improve their statistics. My pick for this match is Handicap1 (-1.5) at 1.55, as the hosts are indeed strong at the moment.
