On Sunday, 9 June, in a friendly match, the Mexico national team will host Brazil. The "Seleção" have not played since March, when they drew 3-3 with Spain in a friendly, whereas last Thursday, Mexico suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat to Uruguay.
Mexico: Rangel; B. Garcia, Guzman, Orozco, Montes; Alvarez, Beltran; Romo, Vega, Huerta; Jimenez.
Brazil: Alisson; Danilo, Militão, Marquinhos, Wendell; Guimarães, Luis; Raphinha, Paqueta, Vinicius; Rodrygo.
Mexico was eliminated in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup but went on to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup. However, last spring, "El Tri" once again disappointed their fans in the Nations League, where they lost to the USA in the final in March. This week, the Mexicans capitulated to Uruguay (0-4) in a friendly, with Darwin Nunez of Liverpool scoring a hat-trick.
Like Brazil, Mexico is preparing for the upcoming Copa America this summer, and "El Tri" find themselves in Group B along with Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica. Coached by Jaime Lozano, the team has never won the tournament but finished second in 1993 and reached the semi-finals three times, last achieving this feat in 2007.
Fans will be pleased to know that their favourites have scored in eight of their last nine matches. Most players called up for Copa America play for clubs in their home country, with only defenders Cesar Montes (Almeria) and Jorge Sanchez (Porto), midfielders Edson Alvarez (West Ham), Luis Chavez (Dynamo), and Pineda (AEK Athens, 10 goals) along with striker Santiago Gimenez (Feyenoord, 4 goals) playing abroad. In attack, Uriel Antuna (Cruz Azul, 60 matches, 13 goals) and Alexis Vega (Toluca, 28 matches, 6 goals) are prominent figures, although experienced goalkeeper Ochoa (150 matches, Salernitana), defender Gallardo (Monterrey, 98 matches) and strikers Lozano (PSV Eindhoven, 70 matches, 18 goals) and Raul Jimenez (Fulham, 104 matches, 33 goals) are not part of the June camp.
The last two years have been highly challenging for the Brazilian team. Once again, they prematurely exited the World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022, and the team, with five world championships to their name, struggled to recover from this disappointment.
In the qualification for the next World Cup, the Seleção started poorly, losing 3 out of 6 matches and currently sitting 6th in the South American zone (out of 10). However, despite losing three consecutive games to Uruguay (2-0), Colombia (2-1), and Argentina (1-0), the yellow-greens defeated England (1-0) in a friendly in March.
This success was followed by a 3-3 draw with Spain a few days later. Goals from Rodrigo and Olmo were met with a response from Rodrygo in the first half, with Endrick and Paqueta scoring after the break. The coaching staff will not be pleased to know that their team has won only two out of their last eight away games.
Captain and top scorer Neymar (Al-Hilal, 79 goals) is out due to injury, as are centre-forwards Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal, 19 goals) and Richarlison (Tottenham, 20 goals). Goalkeeper Ederson (Manchester City) and midfielder Casemiro (Man United) are also unavailable due to injuries. However, Alisson (Liverpool), Marquinhos (PSG), Danilo (Juventus) and Militão (Real Madrid), midfielders Lucas Paqueta (West Ham, 10 goals) and Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle), and forwards Vinicius (Real Madrid, 3 goals), Raphinha (Barcelona, 6 goals), and Rodrygo (5 goals) are expected to get playing time tonight.
Mexico has won only 10 out of 41 matches against Brazil, suffering 24 defeats (including a 2-0 loss in the round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup).
Mexico is eager to rebound after their disappointing defeat to Uruguay, but it won't be easy against a talent-packed Brazil. The yellow-greens need to regain their form after a disappointing few months and prepare for the upcoming Copa America. My prediction is a victory for the visitors.
