On Wednesday evening, Sierra Leone will host Djibouti in a World Cup qualifying match at the Ben Mhamed El-Abdi Stadium in Morocco. Both teams failed to secure victory in the first two rounds, significantly complicating their prospects, especially with Egypt, Burkina Faso, and Guinea-Bissau in the same group.
The hosts played to a goalless draw against Ethiopia and lost 2-0 to Egypt in the first two rounds. These matches took place a month after Amidu Karimu replaced John Keister as head coach.
Despite the unlikely chances of progressing from the group, Sierra Leone has been quite successful in home games. The fact that this match will be held on neutral ground in Morocco adds to their challenge. Former West Bromwich, Aston Villa, and Hull City defender Curtis Davies might make his debut for Sierra Leone at 39 years old.
Two losses at the start leave Abdurahman Okie's team at the bottom of the group. Djibouti was thrashed 6-0 by Egypt and narrowly defeated 1-0 by Guinea-Bissau.
For a country with only two wins in World Cup qualifiers – the first against Somalia in 2007 and Eswatini in 2019 – expecting a positive outcome tomorrow is unrealistic. A draw would be considered a positive result, but whether that’s possible remains to be seen.
Even though the match is on neutral ground, Sierra Leone has too many quality players, even if they aren’t in top leagues. Djibouti will find it hard to compete with such a team, making a -1.5 handicap for the favourites look optimal, but you can play more greedily.
It is hard to imagine what Djibouti can offer their opponents. Sierra Leone is the more skilled team and absolutely needs to win. With the group being very challenging, they need to win by a large margin. Therefore, a total over in this match seems very likely.
