On Wednesday, the 5th of June, as part of a rescheduled match of the fifth round of the Copa Sudamericana group stage, Tomayapo will host Internacional at their home ground. The hosts are at the bottom of Group C and have already lost any chances of advancing, while the red-and-whites must secure a win at all costs.
The match will take place at Estadio IV Centenario in Tarija.
Tomayapo has failed to impress in the current Copa Sudamericana campaign, unable to secure a single win and ensuring their early exit from the group stage. The Bolivian side lost to Delfin in their opening match, followed by a draw with Internacional, but it all went downhill from there. Losses to Belgrano and Delfin extinguished any hope of making it to the playoffs, leaving the home team with no motivation for their final game of the tournament.
Moreover, they are in a deep crisis, having lost five consecutive matches across all competitions! In their latest domestic league match, Tomayapo capitulated against Blooming with a 1-0 scoreline. Additionally, the Bolivians have failed to score in three of their last five matches. Their defence is equally problematic, failing to keep a clean sheet in six of their last seven matches, conceding an average of two goals per game this spring.
Over the past weekend, Internacional secured a 1-0 victory over Cuiaba thanks to a second-half goal from Hugo Mallo. Eduardo Coudet's men will now aim to build on this success in the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday, as the red-and-whites must take all three points to keep their playoff hopes alive. After goalless draws in the first two rounds, the Brazilian side triumphed over Delfin but suffered their first defeat against group leaders Belgrano, which saw them drop to third place in the standings.
A win would put Internacional level on points with second-placed Delfin, who have only one game left, or even surpass them if they win by at least a three-goal margin. Notably, the Brazilian team has performed well on the road, suffering only one defeat in their last 12 away matches across all competitions.
In the first round, these teams played to a 0-0 draw, which was their first-ever meeting against each other.
The three goals scored against Delfin might boost Tomayapo's confidence; however, the hosts have no tournament motivation and are out of playoff contention. Internacional, on the other hand, must win and close the gap to second place (ideally with a significant goal margin). I foresee no obstacles for the favourite and predict a triumph for the Brazilian giant with a -1.5 handicap.
Internacional boasts a stellar attack by Latin American standards, with Borre and Valencia leading the line. They are motivated to score as many as possible to secure second place. I bet on the visitors' ITO of over 2.5 goals.
Internacional needs to win to keep their playoff hopes alive, so they will attack more and dominate possession. I bet on the visitors to win the corner count with a -2.5 handicap.
Tomayapo will spend most of the game defending, leading to frequent fouls. I bet on the hosts to win the yellow card count.
I predict a final score of 1-3 in favour of Internacional.
