On Thursday, 9 May, as part of the second leg of the Europa League semi-final, "Atalanta" will host "Marseille" at their home ground. The Italian team is a step away from its first European Cup final, although the "porters" haven't lost in their last five matches and have gained good momentum.
The match will be held in Bergamo at the Atleti Azzurri stadium.
"Atalanta" managed not to lose at the Velodrome a week ago, which is a success for the Bergamaschi. For instance, the team's head coach Gasperini said after the match that he understood why "Marseille" had lost only one home match this season (against PSG). As for the hosts, the blue-and-whites have lost only twice in 2024 and have a run of two consecutive victories at home: against "Fiorentina" (4:1) and "Empoli" (2:0). "Atalanta" ranks fifth on the Serie A table and currently has every chance to qualify for the upcoming Champions League.
Last Monday, the Italian club had to work hard in Salerno, but the favourite managed to claim its third consecutive championship victory (1:2), with Scamacca and Kupminas scoring in the second half. Gian Piero Gasperini's charges are not only doing well in Europe, but have also booked themselves a place in the final of the country’s cup – at the end of this month they will meet "Juventus" in Rome.
"Marseille" fans showed great support for their favourites from the stands at the Velodrome, but it wasn't enough for their team to win a week ago. Generally, the white and blue are failing to make it into European cups through the national championship, as they are only in 7th place in the tournament table, two points behind "Lens" (last weekend the team did not play in Ligue 1 due to this semi-final). However, Jean-Louis Gasset's charges are heading to Italy without defeat in their last five matches, drawing with "Toulouse" (2:2) and "Nice" (2:2) at home at the end of April.
While "Atalanta" have never made it to the final of the European cups, the "porters" can boast rich achievements in this aspect: they were the strongest team in Europe in 1993, and then lost in 1999, 2004 and 2018 in the final matches of the UEFA Cup and the Europa League. It's important to note that "Marseille" have only won one of six away matches on the continental stage this campaign, and have also only earned 11 points away from home in Ligue 1.
The match a week ago ended in a 1:1 draw, and before that, the teams had never met.
"Marseille" had all the chances to win the first meeting and gain an advantage before the trip to Italy, but failed to take several good chances to score. Football often reminds us that we need to seize our chances, as the opponent will not delay doing it after some time. This is exactly the scenario that could unfold in Bergamo, especially since the "porters" have lost four of their last five away matches. "Atalanta" has been performing beautifully at home and have every chance to enter their first European Cup final, I bet on a home win.
"Marseille" has conceded at least twice in all five of their previous away matches, while the hosts have managed to score six goals in the last two matches. Confidently place a bet on Atalanta's individual total over 1.5 goals.
With the support of the home stands, "Atalanta" will be the first to play and dominate possession, so it makes sense to bet on a Bergamo’s victory in corners.
Neither side is known for their penchant for rough play, so I'm betting on under 4.5 total yellow cards in the match (one yellow was shown in the first match).
I predict an exact score of 2:1 in favour of "Atalanta".
