On Thursday, 18th April, as part of the second leg of the Europa League quarterfinals, Roma will host Milan on their home turf. After a long winning streak, the "Rossoneri" slowed down last week, while the "Wolves", led by De Rossi, are in excellent shape and are preparing for their third consecutive European semi-final.
Roma: Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Smalling, Spinazzola; Bove, Paredes, Pellegrini; Dybala, Lukaku, El Shaarawy.
Milan: Maignan; Calabria, Tomori, Gabbia, Hernandez; Bennacer, Reijnders; Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Leao; Giroud.
Last week, Roma pulled off a feat, winning the first quarterfinal match against Milan at the San Siro (0:1). The Roman side quickly took control with effort from Mancini and held onto a minimal advantage, despite pressure from the Rossoneri for the remaining time. Consequently, the Eternal City's club are set to reach their third consecutive continental semi-final. Finishing second in their quartet, after Slavia Prague but ahead of Servette and Sheriff Tiraspol, the red-and-orange side defeated Feyenoord and then Brighton (4:1 on aggregate) in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Daniele De Rossi's charges are fifth in the Serie A table, trailing fourth-placed Bologna by just four points. It's important to note that the Wolves have been nearly flawless at the Olimpico, suffering only two defeats this season (from Inter Milan and Milan), scoring goals in every home match!
Contrary to many expectations, Milan lost to Roma (0:1) in front of their home fans last week. The Rossoneri conceded an early goal from a corner, created several dangerous moments near the opponents' goal but failed to capitalize. Stefano Pioli's men have made noticeable progress in this season's Europa League, finishing third in their Champions League group behind Borussia Dortmund and PSG. In the playoffs of the second-tier continental championship, the guests prevailed over Rennes (5:3 on aggregate) and Slavia Prague (7:3).
On the domestic front, the Lombards are comfortable in second place in the Serie A table, significantly behind leaders Inter and six points ahead of pursuing Juventus. After a five-game winning streak, the Rossoneri played to a draw (3:3) against Sassuolo last Sunday. Notably, Pioli's team have won only four of their last seven away matches in all competitions.
Roma, who had not won against Milan in the last 10 encounters, broke the prolonged streak last week. Before this, the Rossoneri accumulated 6 victories and 4 draw matches against the Wolves.
The last team to win two away games against Roma in a single season was Fiorentina in the 2014-15 campaign, and Milan would need to replicate such a feat to advance to the semi-finals. Nonetheless, this outcome seems improbable: Under De Rossi's tutelage, the Wolves have been in inspiring form and churn out wins one after another. With home turf advantage, at the very least, they should avoid defeat this Thursday.
Roma will not push the game as they are content with the current score in the duel. My prediction is for the total goals to be under 3.
Milan needs to make up for the first leg and that means the Rossoneri will have to take the initiative and attack more dynamically. I expect at least five corners from the visitors in the game.
Even in the first leg, 4 yellow cards were shown - so the return match promises to heat up even more. I confidently predict the total amount of yellow cards to be over 4.5.
I predict a score of 1:1.
