On Tuesday, 9 April, in the first match of the Champions League quarter-finals, Arsenal will take on Bayern Munich on their home ground. The Gunners struggled to overcome Porto on penalties in the last round, while Thomas Tuchel's charges got the better of Lazio over two legs (3:1).
Arsenal: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tomiyasu; Odegaard, Jorginho, Rice; Saka, Havertz, Martinelli.
Bayern Munich: Ulreich; Kimmich, Upamecano, Kim, Davies; Goretzka, Laimer; Muller, Musiala, Gnabry; Kane.
The match will take place in London at the Emirates Stadium.
After an outstanding group stage performance, Arsenal returned to the Champions League play-off. The first round task proved much tougher than initially expected - against tenacious Porto, which won the first match 1:0 and managed to force a penalty shootout in the return leg. Eventually, the English team proceeded and will now meet Bayern, a club that has frequently upset the Gunners in the main continental championship.
In the league, Mikel Arteta's charges are battling for the title with Liverpool and Manchester City: the hosts chalked up eight straight victories before the international break, after which they drew with the Citizens at the Etihad. However, immediately after this slip, the Londoners defeated Luton (2:0), followed by Brighton last week (0:3). At home, the hosts are remarkably convincing too, claiming six consecutive victories in all competitions, conceding just three(!) goals!
As in every year, Bayern dominated their group, winning 5 matches with one draw. However, in the round of 16, the Bavarians had to contend with formidable resistance from Lazio, which won the first match in Rome (1:0), but eventually lost at the Allianz Arena by 3:0. Thomas Tuchel's charges prematurely exited the German Cup and, more significantly, lag behind Bayer Leverkusen in the league. Therefore, the team's only remaining goal for the season is triumph in the Champions League.
With seven rounds remaining in the national championship, the eleven-time title holders trail the Alonso team by 16 points, largely due to two losses in the last two rounds: in the "Klassiker" against Borussia Dortmund (0:2) and against Heidenheim (3:2) last weekend. The prestigious grand team managed to score twice thanks to efforts from Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane, but let in three goals in the second half. The guests' recent away results are shocking: only one win in the previous six away matches in all competitions!
This will be the 15th face-to-face meeting between these teams; all of them have taken place in the 21st century: out of which Bayern have won 7, and Arsenal - 4. In the Champions League play-off, the Bavarians have pulverised the English three times in a row with the same score (5:1).
In the old days, Bayern frequently thrashed the Gunners in the Champions League, but such a scenario seems incredible now. Arsenal are confidently fighting for the league title, while the Bavarians appear a pale shadow of their former selves and regularly falter against opponents of any level. Sure, the Bavarians can fight back at the Allianz Arena, but with the support of their home crowd, Mikel Arteta's men should gain an advantage - I'm betting on a home field victory.
I'm going for an exact score of 1:0 in favour of Arsenal.
Arsenal will look to play as pragmatically as possible and keep a clean sheet, whereas the Bavarians will also not push matters as they have the return leg at Allianz Arena ahead. I'm not expecting a high-scoring shootout here and am predicting a total of under 3 goals.
Both teams preach an exclusively attacking style of football and take more than 6 corners on average per match. I confidently bet on a total of over 9.5 corners.
Neither team is known for excessive roughness on the pitch, so I'm forecasting a total of under 3.5 yellow cards.
