On Thursday, 14, within the 1/8 final of the Europa League, "Rangers" will host "Benfica" on their home ground. "Gers" led twice in the match in Lisbon, but each time "the eagles" were able to restore the balance on the scoreboard – making this upcoming meeting even more intriguing.
The match will take place in Glasgow at Ibrox Stadium.
Last week "Rangers" came close to causing a sensation against "Benfica" in an away game. Leading for a long time, the blues eventually conceded in the second half, with a 2:2 draw. In the Scottish championship, "Gers", as before, lead the standings, two points ahead of "Celtic". Surprisingly, after losing to "Motherwell" (1:2) 10 days ago, "Rangers" redeemed themselves last weekend with a victory in the Cup against "Hibernian" (0:2), courtesy of goals by John Lundstram and Fabio Silva. Philip Klement's charges have not lost any of the last nine Europa League home games, and have also won eight and drawn three of their previous 11 encounters at Ibrox with Portuguese teams.
Last week, "Benfica" managed to equalise in the second half, even though they were originally deemed the favourites of the clash. Moreover, in the previous round, "the eagles" barely beat the modest "Toulouse" (winning 2:1 in the first match, 0:0 in the second). Lisbonners have recently been in a minor crisis: they suffered a cup defeat against Sporting CP and were brutally defeated by "Porto" (5:0). They gave themselves a little mood boost last weekend by beating "Estoril" (2:0), thanks to goals by Orkun Kökçü, Marcos Leonardo and Tiago Gouveia – and "the eagles" still trail "Sporting" by one point in the standings.
These teams met each other in the group stage of the Champions League in 2020 when both matches ended in a draw (3:3 and 2:2).
The hosts rarely stumble at Ibrox in the league, but the class of "the eagles" still surpasses all other teams in Scotland's elite division. A failure in the Europa League could cost Roger Schmidt his coaching seat. The last three encounters between Rangers and Benfica have ended in a draw and such a result is more than likely this Thursday.
