On Tuesday, 5th of March, as part of the second leg of the Champions League ⅛ finals, Munich's "Bayern" will host "Lazio" on their home field. The Romans are nearing their first quarter-finals of the tournament in the last two decades, while the champions of Germany risk being devoid of any trophies for the first time in many seasons.
"Bayern": Neuer; Kimmich, De Ligt, Kim, Davies; Pavlovic, Goretzka; Tel, Muller, Musiala; Kane.
"Lazio": Provedel; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Hysaj; Guendouzi, Cataldi, Alberto; Anderson, Immobile, Zaccagni.
The clash will take place in Munich at the Allianz Arena.
To everyone's astonishment, Bayern lost the first match of the Champions League ⅛ final in the capital of Italy (1:0). This failure only verified the team's problems, which a few days before the Italian defeat got thoroughly beaten by Bayer Leverkusen (3:0) and suffered an even more sensational loss from Bochum (3:2) a week later. This terrible run led to the head coach Thomas Tuchel announcing his departure at the end of the season. Last weekend, the Whites and Reds narrowly prevailed over RB Leipzig with a score of 2:1 in the championship, however, last weekend, the Munich team failed to continue the winning run - they drew 2:2 with Freiburg.
Since Bayern has already been knocked out of the national cup and conceded the Supercup to Leipzig, the prospect of falling without trophies is more than real. Thomas Tuchel confronts a multitude of injuries: at the infirmary, Buchmann, Sarr, Kingsley Coman (3 goals, 3 assists in Bundesliga), left-back Davis, winger Gnabry, and midfielders Laimer, Marusic, and Peretz are rehabilitating.
Lazio achieved minor success by winning the first match 1:0 in front of their supporters after a penalty kick goal from Ciro Immobile. It is going to be a rough ride for Maurizio Sarri's protégés at Allianz Arena, considering that the Romans do not seem too reassuring with their recent form. Following a 1:2 loss to Bologna, the Eagles overcame Torino (0:2) and then suffered another defeat from Fiorentina (2:1). Last Friday, the Blues and Whites disappointed their fans once more, this time at home against Milan, with three ejections from the Romans' lot during the game.
The capital team is now in the eighth position in Serie A, lagging 4 points behind the highest six. It should be mentioned that Lazio accessed the Champions League playoffs only twice and their prior attempt in 2021 led to a knockout by Bayern. In all continental championships, the Eagles came out victorious in 12 out of the 13 most recent face-offs following a win in the initial match.
This match will be the fourth head-to-head encounter between the teams (the last standoff a few weeks ago ended with Romans' 1:0 victory).
Bayern has no choice but to attack from the get-go and recover with the support of their home Allianz Arena. However, the current form of Munich raises many questions: the team has won only once in the last five matches in all competitions and the team's infirmary is overflowing. Lazio knows how to hold a solid defense under Sarri's guidance and will cleverly exploit counterattacks. My prediction - handicap in favour of the guests 2.
Bayern is struggling seriously with creating opportunities at the opponents' gates and hasn't scored more than three goals in the last five matches. My prediction - individual total of the favourite under 2.5 goals.
There's no doubt that Munich from the very start will besiege Provedel's gates and will not let the Romans cross the halfway line. I'm betting on the host's individual total corners over 3.5 in the first half.
Lazio will play second fiddle and constantly interrupt the opponent's attack rhythm. I am betting on the victory of the guests in terms of yellow cards.
I'm placing a bet on the exact score 1:0 in favour of Bayern.
