Today, as part of the 3rd round of Group B, the national teams of Mozambique and Ghana will play.
The Mozambique national team, in a difficult position ahead of the last round of the Africa Cup of Nations, has a slim chance of leaving the group. In the first round, the team surprised everyone, drawing 2:2 with Egypt. Mozambique scored both goals from just two shots on target, overturning the game in the middle of the second half. Mohamed Salah, however, salvaged a draw for Egypt from the penalty spot in the closing minutes. This match demonstrated that Mozambique can spring a surprise, but overall, they looked weaker than their opponents.
In their second match against Cape Verde, Mozambique lost 0:3, conceding two long-range shots and making a glaring defensive error, reaffirming their status as outsiders in the group. The star of the squad is left back Atletico Reinildo and Sporting's Geny Catamo stands out in attack. The rest of the players are not widely known. Reinildo's addition included a yellow card and wing runs without much result.
Mozambique's recent matches ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations have shown mixed results. In friendly matches, Mozambique drew with Botswana and defeated Lesotho, but in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, they lost to Algeria and won against Botswana. These results indicate that the team has the potential for surprises, but overall remains one of the weakest teams in their group.
The Ghana national team, with experienced veterans, surprisingly takes only third place in their group at the Africa Cup of Nations. In the first match of the tournament, the team suffered a 1:2 defeat against Cape Verde. Ghanaians equalised the score in the 56th minute thanks to Djiku, but in the closing minutes, Rodrigues scored the winning goal for Cape Verde. Inaki Williams of Athletic only entered the field on the 60th minute and could not significantly influence the game. In the second match, Ghana drew with Egypt, missing the opportunity to win despite two goals from Mohammed Kudus. The Egyptian team equalised the score twice, and the match ended in a 2:2 draw, which seemed a loss from the "Black Stars".
Before the Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana had a series of unsuccessful matches. The team drew 0:0 with Namibia and lost to the Comoros Islands 0:1 in qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup, but won against Madagascar with a score of 1:0. Thomas Partey's injury significantly weakened Ghana's midfield, where now Salisu Abdul Samed from Lens is the soloist. Mohammed Kudus has predictably become the leader, but his efforts are not enough. In addition, the team is missing Sulemana and Kjære Lamptey from the EPL, a huge loss in attack. The only goal for Ghana in the World Cup qualifiers was scored by naturalised Spaniard-Basque Inaki Williams, who started in the second match but did not distinguish himself. Currently, Ghana faces the challenge of improving their results to overcome the group stage and move further in the tournament.
In history, the teams have met 4 times. In the last friendly match in 2023, Mozambique was stronger with a score of 1:0. In the 2016 CAN qualifiers, Ghana won at home with a score of 3:1 and played a 0:0 draw in the return match. In the first encounter far back in 1996, Ghana was stronger with a score of 2:0.
The "Black Stars" have essentially faltered twice in the first group matches, and if they don't beat the worst team in the group, Ayew and Kudus would do better not to come home. I don't know what Mozambique can offer besides solid defence and playing on the rebound, but with such an attack, the Ghanaians are obliged to take 3 points and hope that Egypt without Salah doesn't beat Cape Verde.
