Continental Hockey League regular championship 2023/2024. The sixth match of the game day features a face-off between two teams presently holding places near the bottom of their conferences. HC Sochi will host Admiral Vladivostok in their home city.
The situation for the Black Sea team is dreadful at the moment. Thanks to a decent start of the season, wherein HC Sochi managed to reach the third position in the conference, they are avoiding the last place in the tournament table. HC Sochi is in a sorry state now, recording a streak of three consecutive losses after the break, just scoring a point with Barys in one of the games. HC Sochi's recent record is dismaying with seven defeats in a row, three of which were beyond regular time. They last tasted victory on November 26th against Amur Khabarovsk.
Currently at the 10th position in the Western Conference's table, they have mustered 33 points from 43 games. These points were garnered from 11 regular-time victories, three wins beyond that and five defeats in overtime. As for the rest, 24 matches they lost without gaining any points. With the highest number of goals conceded (161) in the league, they are the team with the leakiest defence. On the positive side, they are the fifth from the bottom in terms of the goals scored, recording 108 goals.
Leonid Tambiev merits praise for shaping the Vladivostok team into a competent contender in the championship, following a disastrous start and almost half of the team being replaced. In this new team structure, one of the key roles is played by Vasily Demchenko. He is experiencing a renaissance in his career and rarely lets in more than two goals per match. The team's defence seems improving as well. After the break, Admiral has managed to gather three out of six possible points. Currently, they are ranked 11th in the tournament grid, having scored 35 points in 41 matches.
These points were gathered from seven victories in regular time, six beyond it, and nine one-point losses. The remaining 19 meetings ended in Admiral's defeat without any additional points. Despite all this, Admiral Vladivostok is still the least scoring team in the Eastern Conference. However, they are slightly better in terms of conceded goals, holding the fourth position from the bottom with 113 goals.
In total, HC Sochi and Admiral Vladivostok had 17 previous encounters. Admiral Vladivostok triumphed in 11 matches while HC Sochi won 6 times. In this season, Admiral Vladivostok leads with a 3:1 score.
Despite their close positions in the tournament table, HC Sochi is a clear underdog, even playing at home, attributing odds of 3.00 for their win. On the other hand, the odds for Admiral Vladivostok's victory are set at 2.20. Here, I agree with the bookmakers and will simply side with Admiral Vladivostok for the win, as they are evidently stronger than their opponent currently.
If we consider the totals, I suggest choosing ITO2 (2.5) at 1.90. While it's true that Admiral scores very infrequently, scoring three goals against HC Sochi is feasible for them. And this seems a more probable outcome than a simple Admiral victory.
