Today in the third round of the preliminary stage of the European Handball Championship, the teams of Norway and Slovenia will play.
Despite its high level, the Norway team shows instability this season, starting from the games in the Golden League and continuing in the European Handball Championship. The team approaches its third decisive match with uncertainty, risking elimination from the championship. At the European Championship, the Norwegians started with a confident victory over the Polish team with a score of 32:21, but sensationally failed to beat the debutant of the European Championship, the Faroe Islands team, drawing with a score of 26:26. This result was an unexpected turn and raised questions about their stability.
Last season in the Golden League, Norway faced difficulties: they suffered defeats from the Netherlands with a score of 32:37 and from Denmark 24:27, as well as losing to Egypt in the last league match with a score of 23:28. These results show that the Norway team is not in its best form, but in the upcoming match against Slovenia, they need to win to maintain their chances of success in the European Championship. Theoretically, a draw might be enough, but they will certainly not take risks.
The Slovenia team approaches the third decisive match of the European Handball Championship and shows confident play. The team successfully advanced to the main stage of the championship, defeating two outsiders of the tournament: the Faroe Islands with a score of 32:29 and Poland with a score of 32:25, showing good play in attack. It was a bit of a struggle with the Faroese in the first round, but in the end, the Slovenians confidently finished the game.
At last year's World Championship, the Slovenian team also performed well, only losing in the group to strong teams such as Spain and France. In friendly matches before the Euros, the Slovenians also showed good results. In particular, on 5 January, they won against Montenegro with a score of 37:32, and on 29 December, they beat Austria with a score of 34:33. The only defeat in these matches was suffered from Croatia on 6 January with a score of 26:32.
The Norwegians have 4 victories in the last 5 encounters with the Slovenians, but the last time the opponents met was in 2020, in the match for third place at the European Championship where Norway won with a score of 28:20.
The odds for the Norwegians are rapidly decreasing, in the morning it was still 1.6, now it's already 1.45. Slovenia confidently dealt with the group's outsiders and advanced to the main stage of the Euros, so they might not go all out, while the Norwegians, after the fiasco in the match with the Faroes, will clearly be set on victory. I'm trying their victory by at least 2 goals.
