Today, in the first stage of the European Football Championship in handball, the teams of Slovenia and the Faroe Islands will play.
The Slovenia team approaches the start of the European Handball Championship with varied results in preparatory matches. The team won 3 out of 5 friendly games but faced unexpected difficulties, failing to beat the Serbian team and losing to Croatia.
Main results of the friendly matches: On 6 January, Slovenia suffered a defeat from Croatia with a score of 26:32. On 5 January, they achieved a victory over Montenegro 37:32. On 29 December, they won against Austria with a score of 34:33.
In the qualifying stage of the European Championship, the Slovenian team showed confidence, taking first place in their group. The Slovenia team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Kosovo, winning 5 out of 6 matches. The only defeat was from Bosnia and Herzegovina in a tough battle in the final minutes of the game. The Slovenia handball team has the potential for a successful performance at the European Championship, despite some difficulties in the run-up to the tournament, but one should not judge by friendly matches alone.
The Faroe Islands team is preparing for its historic debut at the European Handball Championship. This small island country has shown that it can put up a fight against strong opponents, as confirmed by their latest friendly matches. In these games, the Faroe Islands demonstrated impressive results: on 5 and 6 January, the team achieved two victories over Belgium with scores of 34:29 and 41:31, respectively. However, on 3 and 4 November, the team suffered defeats from Iceland with scores of 29:30 and 24:39.
In the qualifying tournament, the Faroes struggled, taking third place in their group, which did not feature high competition, including opponents from Austria, Ukraine, and Romania. Particularly significant were two victories at the end of the qualifiers: on 26 April, the team defeated Ukraine with a score of 33:26 and on 8 March, they won against Romania with a score of 28:26.
These results show that, despite their small size and limited experience on the international stage, the Faroe Islands could become a surprise of the tournament, although the chances seem slim, in my opinion.
The teams have not previously met even in friendly matches.
Slovenia represents a strong team, and for a successful start, they need to confidently defeat the tournament debutant, which qualified for the tournament largely due to a fortunate group. I bet on Slovenia's victory by at least 6 goals.
