The Netherlands national team lost to Austria, which sensationally took first place in the group

In the final round of the group stage of the European Championship, the Netherlands national team lost to Austria with a score of 2-3.

Already in the 6th minute, Dutch forward Donyell Malen opened the scoring with an own goal. In the 47th minute, his compatriot Cody Gakpo equalized the score. In the 59th minute, Austrian midfielder Romano Schmid put his team ahead. In the 75th minute, the Netherlands tied the score again thanks to a strike from Memphis Depay, but in the 80th minute, Marcel Sabitzer set the final score at 3-2 in favor of Austria.

Thus, Austria unexpectedly took first place in Group D, with 6 points. The French came second with 5 points, the Netherlands third with 4 points. Poland closed the table with just one point. It is worth noting that Austria won a group at a major tournament for the first time since the 1978 World Cup.

The 2024 European Championship is being held in Germany from June 14 to July 14. The teams that finish in the top two places in the group stage, as well as the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the Round of 16.

The reigning European champion is the Italy national team.
