2023 CAF Awards in Marrakech: Osimhen Vies for Top Honor Among Nigerian Greats

Today, the 2023 CAF Awards occur at the Palais des Congrès, Movenpick, Marrakech, Morocco. Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen is a prominent contender for the CAF Africa Player of the Year, following his recent success as the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) 2022/23 Player of the Year. Osimhen's achievement in the Italian league, where he scored 26 goals leading Napoli to a Scudetto, sets him up for a potentially memorable year. If successful, he will join Nigerian legends like Rashidi Yekini, Nwankwo Kanu, Victor Ikpeba, and Emmanuel Amuneke, who have previously won this prestigious award.

Other Nigerian talents in contention include Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie, who was nominated for the women’s Best Player and Best Goalkeeper awards. The event will also be attended by Nigerian legends such as Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Mikel Obi, and Emmanuel Amuneke, among others. Global football celebrities, including Samuel Eto’o, Abedi Pele, and El Hadji Diouf, will grace the ceremony.

Premier League Update: Everton Triumphs Over Chelsea

In the Premier League, Everton has secured a notable 2-0 victory against Chelsea, marking their third consecutive win - a feat last achieved in 2021. Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin scored crucial second-half goals, steering Everton four points clear of the relegation zone. Despite Chelsea’s efforts, with Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer attempting long-range strikes, Everton's defense, led by Jordan Pickford, remained impenetrable. Chelsea's defeat, their seventh under Mauricio Pochettino this season, has further lowered their standing to 12th in the Premier League table.
