The Nigeria Customs Service Women's Basketball Team showcased remarkable skill at the 2023 Africa Women's Basketball League in Alexandria, Egypt, securing a 5th position finish. Their triumph included a decisive 83-53 victory over Kenya's Equity Bank Hawks.
This win marked Customs' fourth victory in seven matches at the championship. Captain Nkem Akaraiwe's outstanding performance featured 27 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and a 44 efficiency rating. Favour Chiamaka Opara contributed significantly with 21 points, and Ebere Cordelia Okeke added 10 points, enhancing the team's success.
The Border Girls began their journey with a victory against the University of Douala and faced challenges against Kenya Ports Authority and Sporting of Alexandria. However, they bounced back, defeating DR Congo's CNSS Basketball Club and Cameroon's Overdose Up Station, leading to their final win against Equity Bank Hawks.
Akaraiwe praised the Comptroller General of Customs for his support, acknowledging the team's swift preparation for the championship. She expressed gratitude on behalf of the team and promised continued excellence.
Simultaneously, Sports Secretary Samuel Onikeku commended the Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi, for his dedication to sports development, highlighting the significance of Customs' 5th place finish after a 23-year hiatus from continental play. Onikeku emphasized the positive outcomes of early preparation and qualification, reflecting on the successful hosting of the zone 3 qualifiers by NCS.
