Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala Crowned African Footballers of the Year Amidst Nigeria's Triumphs

Nigerian football stars Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala were celebrated as the African Footballers of the Year in a prestigious ceremony held in Marrakech. Osimhen, at 24, emerged as a key player for Napoli, leading them to an unexpected victory in Serie A with his impressive tally of 26 goals. His achievement marked him as the top scorer in Italy's premier league. It earned him the honor over other finalists, including Egypt's Mohamed Salah from Liverpool and Morocco's Achraf Hakimi of Paris St Germain.

Osimhen's triumph represents a significant milestone, making him the first Nigerian to receive this accolade since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999. In his heartfelt speech, Osimhen expressed gratitude towards his supporters and acknowledged the role of Africans in his journey despite his challenges.

On the women's side, Nigeria's Barcelona star, Oshoala, was named the Women's African Footballer of the Year, setting a new record with her sixth win. Despite battling injuries, she played a pivotal role in her team's journey to the World Cup round of 16 in Australia & New Zealand, where they fought bravely against England.

The Moroccan men's national team was recognized as the National Team of the Year for their impressive World Cup semi-finals performance in Qatar, with their coach, Walid Regragui, winning Coach of the Year. Meanwhile, Nigeria secured the National Team of the Year award for women. Desiree Ellis of South Africa was honoured as the women’s Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive time.
