Claudio Chiqui Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association, commented on the controversial match with the Moroccan team in the group stage of the 2024 Olympics.
“We waited in the locker room for almost two hours, and our players had to go out again to warm up and continue a match that should have been stopped by the referee after the invasion of the field by Moroccan spectators and the violence against the Argentine delegation. It was really senseless and against the competition rules. We have already filed a complaint with the FIFA Disciplinary Committee to take appropriate regulatory actions and impose sanctions on those responsible,” Mundo Albiceleste quoted Chiqui Tapia.
In the 16th minute of added time to the second half, the Argentinians scored to make it 2-2. At that moment, riots broke out in the stands as fans began throwing firecrackers and various objects onto the field. Police had to be deployed, and players and team members were sent to the locker rooms for safety. The match resumed two hours later. Referee Nyberg checked VAR and ruled offside on the second Argentine goal. After resuming play, the teams played for three more minutes, with the final score being 2-1 in favor of Morocco.
