On Saturday the 4th of May, as part of the 34th tournament of the Spanish Primera, "Mallorca" will welcome "Atletico Madrid" to their home field. Diego Simeone's team is in fourth place, six points ahead of the following "Athletic", while the "islanders" are in 16th place and are fighting to keep their spot in the elite.
"Mallorca": Rajkovic; Gonzalez, Valjent, Raillo, Nastasic, Maffeo; D Rodriguez, S Costa, Mascarell, A Sanchez; Muriqi.
"Atletico": Oblak; Witsel, Gimenez, Hermoso; Molina, De Paul, Koke, Llorente, Lino; Correa, Morata.
The match will take place in Palma de Mallorca at the Mallorca Son Moix Stadium.
This season's Copa del Rey finalist (penalty loss to Athletic Bilbao), "Mallorca" is not having the best campaign in the national championship and is expectedly fighting for survival. However, the yellow-orange can count on staying in the elite, as they have a 6-point lead over the 18th "Cadiz", which will be playing in Madrid against "Real" earlier that day. Meanwhile, the current form of the hosts does not please the fans: four rounds in La Liga without victories, including a 1:1 draw with the "pirates" last weekend, and two consecutive losses - from Madrid "Real" (0:1) and "Seville" (2:1).
Vedat Muriqi put the "islanders" in the lead at the 12th minute of the match, but the yellow-blues levelled the score in the second half thanks to an own goal by Omar Mascarell. Javier Aguirre's team gained 22 points in their 16 home matches of the season, suffering only four losses, and conceded only 13 times in front of their own fans, which is the third-best indicator in the division.
"Atletico" defeated its main competitor for the Champions League ticket - "Athletic Bilbao" - with a score of 3:1 in the last tour. In the first half, the teams exchanged goals by De Paul and Nico Williams, but then the Madrid side got their way with Correa and an own goal by Simon. This season, los colchoneros have not surrendered to the Basques three times, losing in the first round of the championship (2:0), and then twice in the Copa del Rey semi-finals (0:1 at home and 3:0 at San Mames).
In general, the current form of the "matressers" is disappointing; the club was eliminated from the title race rather quickly and is now forced to fight only for a finish in the top four. In the last 10 away matches, the capital club won only twice and lost six times, including a 4:2 fiasco against "Borussia Dortmund" at Signal Iduna Park in the Champions League quarterfinals. Moreover, in terms of the points earned on the road, "Atletico" is only in 7th place in the total score (18 points in 16 matches, 22 goals scored, 21 conceded).
"Atletico" took 3 points in the first-round match (1:0), and in the last 10 head-to-head meetings between these teams, the 2.5 goal-mark was only surpassed in 4 instances.
"Atletico" probably made the toughest effort in the last tour, knocking "Athletic" out of the Champions League race, but now the "matressers" need to consolidate this victory and deal with "Mallorca" who are stubborn at home. The yellow-orange haven't yet guaranteed themselves staying in the elite division, however, they have been unsuccessful for five matches in a row. Even considering the disqualified Griezmann, the "matressers" should have enough strength to take all three points from the island.
As already mentioned above, only once in the last four head-to-head matches did these teams score more than two goals together. I do not expect a high-scoring bout this time - I bet on the total goals being under 3.
"Atletico" only has 4.7 corners per game, the hosts - 4.4. I don't expect an open game with plenty of dangerous moments here and I bet on the total number of corners being under 9.5.
What we are sure to see on Saturday is an abundance of warnings: both teams earn, on average, 2.5 yellow cards per match (I bet on the total being over 4.5).
I bet on the exact score to be 0:1 in favour of "Atletico".
