On Friday, 16th February, within the framework of the 25th round of the Spanish Primera, "Villarreal" will host "Getafe" on their pitch. The visitors, occupying the 10th place in the league table, achieved a home success 3:2 against "Celta" a week ago, while "yellow submarine" is running 13th in the overall standing with 25 points earned.
"Villarreal": Jorgensen; Femenia, Albiol, Mosquera, Cuenca; Akhomach, Comesana, Coquelin, Baena; G Moreno, Sorloth.
"Getafe": Soria; Dakonam, Alvarez, Alderete, Rico; Greenwood, Maksimovic, Milla, Martin; Mata, Mayoral.
The clash will take place in Villarreal at the Ceramica Stadium.
Under Marcelino's helm, the "yellow submarine" may not be participating in the race for European zone entry, but is gradually recovering after a disastrous first half of the season. The hosts have remained undefeated in their previous four Primera rounds, although the team has drawn with relegation-threatened "Cadiz" (0:0) and "Alaves" (1:1) in the last two matches. As a result of such outcomes, the hosts are 13 points behind sixth-placed "Betis", and a full 21 points behind "Athletic Bilbao".
However, qualification for the Champions League is still achievable through the Europa League, as the Spanish team progressed to the tournament's last 16 and can focus solely on domestic matters until March. "Villarreal" has only won three out of 12 home matches in the current campaign, scoring 18 and conceding 22 goals. Additionally, alongside the lack of successful results on the field, the club's infirmary is overflowing.
Based in the outskirts of Madrid, "Getafe" was considered a relegation contender at the start of the season, but now the "Azulones" are demonstrating character and, at times, entertaining their fans. The visitors are only five points behind the European zone-dwelling "Betis", surely dreaming of entering the top six. Last weekend, "Getafe" hosted "Celta", who faced a late comeback victory (3:2), courtesy of a 89th-minute goal by Jaime Mata, a week after a successful draw with "Betis" (1:1) at the Benito Villamarín Stadium.
Thus, Jose Bordalas' charges have won eight matches and drawn nine, amping up a tally of 33 points in total 25 rounds. It's worth mentioning that the Madrileños finished fifth in the 2018/19 campaign, but ended up in 15th place in each of the three previous Primera games. However, "Getafe's" away performance leaves much to be desired, accumulating a meagre nine points in 12 matches, with 18 goals scored and 23 conceded. The recipe for "Getafe's" success lies in their physical strength and athletic players who rarely get injured.
The capital club has not beaten "Villarreal" in the Spanish championship since January 2019 and has suffered defeat on each of the last four visits to the "yellow submarine". The first round match ended goalless.
No La Liga team this season has drawn more away games than "Getafe" (six). "Villarreal" continues to struggle, failing to string together a winning streak for their fans - the hosts have drawn three times in their last four rounds. Considering the defensive-minded style of both teams, it seems reasonable to back a stalemate this Friday.
Neither team is renowned for their attacking approach and will first and foremost ensure they are sound defensively. Betting on a total of less than 3 goals seems reasonable.
I expect a lot of midfield battles and minimal dangerous opportunities for both teams - my prediction is for a total of less than 9.5 corners.
"Getafe" is one of the most fouling teams in Primera, with "Azulones" earning almost 4 bookings per match on average. I would bet on the visitors winning the yellow card count.
My prediction is for a final score of 1:1.
