On Sunday, 12 May, in the frame of the 36th round of Italian Serie A, Genoa will host Sassuolo at home. The home team has settled in the middle of the standings and aren't claiming anything in the remaining matches, while Sassuolo are battling for survival, three points shy of the safety zone.
The clash will take place in Genoa at Luigi Ferraris Stadium.
This season, Genoa have kept their distance from the relegation zone, successfully carrying out their Serie A campaign after being promoted to the top tier. At present, the team holds the 12th position in the league table and are enjoying a stress-free ending to the championship. Despite this, Alberto Gilardino's boys are not relaxing, as evidenced by their single loss in the last 7 rounds with 2 wins and 4 draws. Following an easy home victory over Cagliari (3:0), Genoa ended in a draw with Milan on the road this past weekend (3:3).
The Grifone took the lead in the match twice thanks to efforts from Retegi and Ekuban, but the Rossoneri drew the scoreboard each time. It's worth noting that the hosts rank 12th in the total points tally, earned on their field (24 in 17 home games, 23 goals scored, 21 conceded). However, the red-blue supporters will certainly not be pleased by the fact that their favourites were unable to keep a clean sheet in the last six rounds.
With 3 rounds to go till the end of the season, Sassuolo find themselves in serious danger of relegation, holding the 19th position in the Serie A standings. Davide Ballardini's squad trails Empoli, who are in the 17th spot by three points, Frozinone by three points, and Cagliari by four. This past weekend the team surprised many with a 1:0 home win over Inter Milan, thanks to a goal from Lauriente. This victory put an end to a six-match winless streak in the championship (3 draws and 3 losses).
This season, Sassuolo have won two away matches in 17 showdowns, defeating Inter Milan at San Siro and Empoli with a 3:4 score at Castellani. The latter success was achieved in late November 2023. With this gauge, the squad occupies the fourth place from the bottom in the overall tally (total 9 points in 17 away clashes). Given that the closing matches of the championship for Sassuolo are to be played at home with Cagliari and away to Lazio, they cannot afford to lose points in the upcoming Sunday clash.
The first-leg match ended with an away victory for Genoa with a score of 1:2. Notably, the Grifone hadn't won in the five previous head-to-head encounters in all competitions.
Revitalised by the victory over the Italian champion last weekend, Sassuolo, who desperately need to collect maximum points in the remaining three rounds, could be in good spirits. Genoa, now void of motivation for the rest of the season, are playing out the championship at their leisure. I don't foresee the Grifone pulling their weight to claim victory this Sunday, and because of this my wager is on a double chance for the visitors.
In all five previous instances, these teams have traded goals. Considering Sassuolo's defensive frailties, such an outcome seems very plausible this time around.
Sassuolo have been making more than five corner kicks per match this season and are motivated by the fight for survival. I figure that the guests won't be playing defensively and will make at least four corners in Genoa.
Hosts are earning just two yellow cards per game, guests - 1.8. I will confidently bet on total forewarnings being under 4.5.
My stake is on the exact scoreline of 1:1.
