On Sunday, 28 April within the framework of the 34th round of Serie A, Napoli will host AS Roma. The hosts suffered a shocking defeat to modest side Empoli in their Derby del Sole last weekend, whereas the Romans moved closer to re-entering the Champions League thanks to a triumph over Udinese.
Napoli: Meret; Di Lorenzo, Jesus, Rrahmani, Rui; Anguissa, Lobotka, Traore; Politano, Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia.
Roma: Svilar; Karsdorp, Mancini, Huijsen, Angelino; Bove, Cristante, Pellegrini; Dybala, Abraham, El Shaarawy.
Last season's Scudetto triumph seems far behind, as Napoli currently occupies a modest 8th place in Serie A, trailing five points behind the top seven. The reigning Italian champions are unlikely to enter the upcoming Champions League, but a berth to lower-ranked European cups seems still achievable. The team has been going through a slump lately, having won only one of their last six league matches, drawing three times, and losing twice. After a victory over Monza (4:2), the Blues lost at home to Frosinone (2:2), and then suffered defeat last weekend to Empoli (1:0).
Napoli has not only lost their previous attacking flair but has conceded at least one goal in 12 rounds in a row, with only two longer streaks without a clean sheet in the club's history – the last time in 1998. Napoli will have to face Roma, Bologna, and Fiorentina before the end of the season, and any slip-ups could doom the Partenopei's hopes for a European spot.
Sitting at 5th place in Serie A, three points ahead of 6th placed Lazio, Roma is battling for a spot in the Champions League. The capital club has made an impressive rise under the guidance of Daniele De Rossi, appointed as head coach in January. Over the last 13 rounds, the Giallorossi have only lost twice, winning nine times and drawing twice. Following a seven-match unbeaten run, the Wolves suffered a defeat last Monday, losing to direct top-4 rival Bologna at home by 3:1.
However, on Thursday, Roma finished the last 18 minutes of their match against Udinese and managed to secure a crucial 1:2 victory thanks to a late goal by Bryan Cristante. Roma consistently defeats Serie A's bottom-half clubs but records the fewest points in head-to-head meetings with representatives of the top eight. In the Europa League, the capital side recently edged out AC Milan and will now face Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-finals.
In their December match, Napoli fell to Roma by 2:0 in Rome, ending a seven-match streak without a loss to the Wolves across all tournaments.
Both sides are fueled by their battle to finish in the top five, but their current form contrasts sharply. Napoli seem unable to regain optimal fitness, securing a single victory in their last seven rounds. In contrast, the Romans under De Rossi impress with their attacking prowess. Despite personnel losses, the chances of the visitors taking points from Naples are underrated – my bet is a double chance for Roma.
Six out of the last seven goals scored in matches between Roma and Napoli were netted after the 75th minute. Hence, a bet on a continuation of this streak tonight seems reasonable.
Both sides boast tall attacking talent and are capable of regularly threatening the opposition's goal with set pieces. I'm wagering on an over 9.5 total corners bet.
Given the tension in the league standings and previous head-to-head encounters (for instance, 11 yellow cards were shown in the first meeting this season), it would be sensible to bet on an over 4.5 total bookings.
My bet is on a 1:2 score in Roma's favour.
