Today within the framework of the 29th round of Serie A, Frosinone will host Lazio at their home stadium. In case of another hiccup, the Roman club may face relegation to the bottom half of the tournament table, whereas "Frosinone", being deep in the crisis itself, have not tasted the joy of victory in their last seven matches.
Frosinone, as the winner of the last season's Serie B, logically struggled to stay afloat in the current campaign. At the moment, the team is ranked 18th in the league table, trailing one point behind the safety spot. Despite Frosinone's fairly recent settlement in the bottom trio, they've achieved little success in recent weeks. Hence, the hosts haven't secured a single victory in the last seven matches (2 draws and 5 defeats): after a draw at home versus "Lecce" (1:1), Frosinone slipped to a 1:0 defeat to "Sassuolo" last week. Since mid-December, under the guidance of Eusebio Di Francesco, Frosinone have secured fewer Serie A points than any other side, totalling five in 13 matches, and conceded the most goals — no doubt a source of sad lament for the Tifosi. It is also worth noting that, given all of the recent results, the eventual dismissal of the Italian tactician does not seem an unlikely outcome in the event of another debacle...
However, it's essential to note that the hosts have put on quite a worthy performance on home turf: they've collected 21 points from 14 home matches (the 11th-best record in the division). Frosinone will miss key Moroccan attacking midfielder Harroui (3 goals and 2 assists), defenders Bonifazi, Marchizza and Oyono, as well as regularly appearing substitutes Calai and Lusuardi. Forward Cheddira, who's found the net twice in their last three matches, will be featuring in the attack line once again; he'll be supported by promising Matias Soule (10 goals and 2 assists), who's experienced a slight drop in form compared to the first half of the season. Paul Lirola is set to start in the defensive quartet, while Kaio Jorge will be ready to reinforce the play in the second half.
Lazi, who are currently 9th in the Serie A league table and four points adrift of the top seven, have noticeably slumped compared to last season. The Biancocelesti have only managed to clinch two wins from their last eight league matches, resulting in one draw and five defeats. After a triumph against "Torino" (0:2), the Romans sequentially surrendered to "Fiorentina" (2:1), "AC Milan" (0:1) and "Udinese" last Monday (1:2). Adding salt to the wound, the Eagles were knocked out of the last 16 round of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, which led Maurizio Sarri to resign; now, the capital team will be managed by his assistant Giovanni Martusciello. In 2024, no other team in Serie A made fewer attempts on goal than Lazio.
On the positive side, the visitors have managed to reach the semi-final of the Coppa Italia, where they'll soon face "Juventus". Principal goalkeeper Provedel will not be available for this match as he sustained an injury in the last round, joining Patrick (defender) and Rovella (midfielder) in the infirmary. In a piece of good news, key French anchorman Guendouzi has served out his suspension and will be able to return to the pitch; the same applies to defenders Marušić and Pellegrini. Playmaker Luis Alberto (4 goals and 4 assists), as well as forwards Felipe Anderson (3 goals and 6 assists), Zaccagni (3 goals) and Immobile (6 goals) will be in charge of creativity in attack. Pedro and Tati Castellanos can contribute to the game by making an appearance in the second half.
Frosinone are about to face off against a team they have yet to defeat in Serie A with the Canaries having lost four out of their past five direct encounters. The game of the first round concluded with a 3:1 victory for the "Eagles".
While Frosinone have accumulated 21 out of their total point tally of 24 at the Stirpe Stadium, the majority of these points were obtained prior to Christmas. Lazio are also veering towards a crisis, but the departure of Maurizio Sarri is bound to shake up the players of the capital club. If they stumble against the league bottom-dwellers once again, the dream of a European cup zone finish might become unattainable. I'm placing my bet on a victory for the favourite with an Asian handicap of 0.
