On Wednesday, 14th February, as part of a rescheduled match of the 21st round of the Italian Serie A, Bologna will host Fiorentina at home. The Derby dell' Appennino will see two teams which are separated only by two points in the league table compete, both aiming to crack into the top six by the end of the season.
Bologna: Skorupski; Posch, Beukema, Calafiori, Kristiansen; Freuler, Aebischer; Orsolini, Ferguson, Fabbian; Zirkzee.
Fiorentina: Terracciano; Kayode, Milenkovic, Ranieri, Biraghi; Duncan, Arthur; Gonzalez, Bonaventura, Ikone; Belotti.
The fixture will take place in Bologna at the Renato Dall'Ara Stadium.
With their appointment of Thiago Motta as manager last season, Bologna has delighted fans with their successful run. Currently at fifth place in Serie A and only three points away from fourth, the Rossoblu could potentially secure a pass to European competition and even aim for a slot in the Champions League at the end of the campaign. After an interval of four rounds without victory (two draws and two losses), the hosts have revived their winning ways.
With the support of their home stands, Bologna triumphed against Sassuolo (4:2) and Lecce (4:0) last weekend. Thanks to two goals each half, incuding a brace from Riccardo Orsolini, the Emiliani have achieved nine victories in the first 12 home fixtures of Serie A for the first time since 1973. Overall, the team has remained unbeaten at their home ground for 11 league rounds, which is their best result in the last 30 years.
Fiorentina also aspires to qualify for Champions League and currently stands seventh in Serie A, trailing their competitors by only two points. Lately, the Tuscans have experienced a few hiccups, having gone four rounds without a win (one draw and three losses). Last weekend, they finally redeemed themselves with fans, securing a convincing home victory against Frosinone with a scoreline of 5:1. Andrea Belotti scored his first goal since his on-loan transfer while Jonathan Ikone finally broke his season-long goal drought.
Having overcome Bologna in the Italian Cup quarter-finals, Fiorentina is closer than ever to reaching the final, with Atalanta awaiting them in the penultimate round. Furthermore, Vincenzo Italiano's team has also made it to the 1/8 finals of the Conference League, hence can focus on domestic competition until March.
Bologna suffered a 2:1 defeat in Florence in the first round. In January, the Rossoblu surrendered again to the Viola in the Italian Cup (0:0, penalty shootout defeat).
The Rossoblu have been sensational at their home ground and it seems like they have recovered from their January slump. Moreover, the hosts are keen to redeem themselves after the two defeats in the first half of the season. Fiorentina, having only garnered 14 points from 11 away games, won't be able to count on their crucial centre-back Martinez due to suspension. My prediction is a victory for the home side with a handicap of 0.
Bologna has conceded only 7 goals at home in the current Serie A campaign, thus its defence is highly reliable. My bet here is on Fiorentina's individual total under 1.5 goals.
I don't expect an abundance of corners from these teams, as both teams average about 4 corners per match. My forecast is a total under 9.5 corners.
The teams aren't known to be excessively rough on the field, hence my bet is on the total number of yellow cards under 4.5.
My prediction is a precise score of 1:0 in favour of Bologna.
