On Saturday, 2 February, as part of the 27th round of the Premier League, Brentford will be hosting Chelsea on their home turf. The Blues will attempt to take revenge on the Bees for their defeat in the first round at Stamford Bridge just a little over four months ago, while the hosts are in the midst of a crisis, having suffered three consecutive losses.
Brentford: Flekken; Jorgensen, Ajer, Collins; Roerslev, Janelt, Jensen, Norgaard, Reguilon; Wissa, Toney.
Chelsea: Petrovic; Gusto, Disasi, Colwill, Chilwell; Fernandez, Caicedo; Palmer, Gallagher, Mudryk; Jackson.
The contest will take place in London at the Brentford Community Stadium.
At the moment, Brentford is holding the 16th place in the Premier League standings and is five points clear of the relegation zone, with a game in hand. The team's current form is raising concerns among fans: the hosts have lost 10 out of their last 12 league matches, with only two victories. Following their win against Wolves (0:2), Brentford lost to Liverpool (1:4), Manchester City (1:0) and to West Ham this past Monday (4:2): Jarrod Bowen's hat-trick and Emerson Palmieri's wonder strike nullified the goals of Neal Maupay and Yoane Wissa.
Since mid-December, Thomas Frank's squad has only won one out of their last six home matches in all competitions and following their duel against Chelsea, the Bees will face Arsenal. Having been ousted from the FA Cup, the London club can now focus on their national championship performances.
This season, Chelsea has failed to live up to supporters' expectations and currently stands only 11th in the Premier League table. Even though a top four finish is already out of reach, the Londoners can still hope to finish in a European competition zone (trailing by 4 points from the seventh-placed Brighton). After suffering two consecutive round losses, the Blues defeated Crystal Palace in February (1:3) and managed to draw with Manchester City (1:1). Last weekend, Chelsea was disappointingly defeated by a semi-reserve Liverpool squad in the League Cup final (0:1 after extra time).
On the bright side, Mauricio Pochettino's charges secured their ticket to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup last Wednesday, overcoming Leeds United with a score of 3:2: Nicholas Jackson, Mikhail Mudrik and Connor Gallagher each scoring a goal. It won't likely surprise anyone that the visitors have had mediocre away performances in the current campaign: they've gathered a mere 17 points from 13 away matches, scored 22 goals, and conceded 23.
The Blues have won only one of their five Premier League encounters against Brentford – the lowest victory rate (20%) against any opponent they have met at least five times in the league competition.
If defeats have nearly become routine for Brentford, considering the Bees' crisis, predicting the outcome of a match involving Chelsea is quite challenging. Nevertheless, Pochettino's charges will be full of determination to close the gap to the European zone in the standings after this round, especially since another chance to participate in continental competitions – by triumph in the League Cup – was lost last weekend. My prediction - a victory for the guests with a handicap of 0.
Both sides have been allowing goals to everyone this winter, but they also possess a quality forward line. The last three head-to-head matches without exchanged goals is an anomaly that will cease on Saturday.
Both capital clubs advocate an exclusively attacking style of football and boast fast wingers - so we're betting on a total over 9.5 for corners.
Neither side is known for excessive roughness on the pitch (averaging two yellow cards per game), so we're betting on a total under 4.5 for warnings.
I'm betting on a precise score of 1:1.
