On Sunday, 4th February, as part of the 23rd round of the Premier League, "Chelsea" will host "Wolverhampton" on their home ground. Last week, the Blues were torn to shreds by "Liverpool" with a score of 4:1, whilst the team managed by Gary O'Neil was defeated by "Manchester United" (3:4) in a truly dramatic ending.
"Chelsea": Petrovic; Disasi, Silva, Badiashile, Gusto; Caicedo, Fernandez; Palmer, Nkunku, Sterling; Jackson.
"Wolverhampton": Sa; Kilman, Dawson, Toti; Semedo, Lemina, Gomes, Ait-Nouri; Sarabia, Neto; Cunha.
The match will be held in London at Stamford Bridge stadium.
As in the previous season, "Chelsea" is displaying unsatisfactory form and languishing in 10th place in the Premier League standings. Although the Londoners initially aimed to fight for the top four, it is now difficult to talk about even finishing in the Europa League zone. However, the hosts picked up a good form in January, taking 3 wins in a row (against Crystal Palace, Luton and Fulham). Yet, last week Mauricio Pochettino's charges suffered a fiasco against "Liverpool" (4:1).
By the break, the Merseysiders deservedly led with a score of 2:0 thanks to goals from Jota and Bradley; on the 65th minute, Dominic Szoboszlai increased the Reds' advantage, and Luis Diaz finally killed the intrigue – after the ball scored by Christopher Nkunku. Moreover, a week ago, "Chelsea" drew 0:0 with "Aston Villa" and will have to play the second leg of the 1/16 finals of the Country Cup. It is worth noting that Pochettino's wards haven't experienced defeat at Stamford Bridge for 10 matches in a row, triumphing in seven of them.
Currently, "Wolverhampton" is in 11th place in the Premier League standings, trailing the Londoners by two points. This week, the Oranges lost in an offensive way at home to "Manchester United", letting in a goal in injury time (3:4). Thus, they interrupted a series of 4 matches without defeat in the national championship (3 victories and 1 draw). After an unconvincing first half, Gary O 'Neil's wards lost by two goals (Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Højlund stood out); in the second half, Pablo Sarabia realised a penalty, but Scott McTominay seemed to kill any intrigue after scoring at the 75th minute.
But it wasn't quite finished: Max Kilman and Pedro Neto pierced the net of Andre Onana's goal, and young Kobbie Mainoo did the victorious goal at the 97th minute in front of a full Molineux! Last weekend, "Wolverhampton" secured a ticket to the 1/8 finals of the FA Cup, defeating "West Bromwich" 0:2.
Gary O'Neil's wards took a 2:1 victory over "Chelsea" just before Christmas. Moreover, the Blues managed to beat the "wolves" only once in the last seven face-to-face battles.
An extra 24 hours of rest will definitely benefit "Chelsea", who have hardly slipped up on their home turf in recent weeks. It's been 45 years since the "wolves" last triumphed at Stamford Bridge, and the visitors' away performance statistics do not please the eye this season: only 11 points garnered in 11 matches. I expect a routine victory from the favourites.
"Chelsea" scores an average of 1.7 goals per game at home. Nkunku is back in action after injury, and both Jackson and Palmer are available. I expect the Blues to score at least two goals on Sunday.
"Chelsea", undoubtedly, will take the lead and keep the ball from the first minutes. The hosts will attack a lot from the flanks and deliver at least 6 corners.
A draw would suit "Wolverhampton" from a tournament perspective, which means that the visitors will try to break the tempo of the opponent's attacks with fouls. I think the Oranges will take the lead in yellow cards.
I'm going to place a bet on an exact score of 2:1 in favour of "Chelsea".
