On Thursday, 22 February, as part of the second leg of the 1/16 finals of the Europa League, Roma will host Feyenoord on their home turf. Following their 1:1 draw last week in Rotterdam, the teams will be up against each other at Stadio Olimpico, where the Giallorossi hardly ever falter.
Roma: Svilar; Karsdorp, Diego Llorente, Mancini, Spinazzola; Cristante, Paredes, Pellegrini; Dybala, Lukaku, Zalewski.
Feyenoord: Wellenreuther; Geertruida, Beelen, Hancko, Hartman; Stengs, Zerrouki, Wieffer; Minteh, Gimenez, Igor Paixao.
The match will take place at Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Last week, Roma earned a convincing draw against Feyenoord, overcoming a deficit just before halftime with the help of Romelu Lukaku. Now, the Italian side will be able to count on home support, making them the favourites for this meeting. After coming second in their Europa League group, Roma ceded first place to Slavia Prague, but still managed to outdo Servette and Sheriff Tiraspol. In the Italian championship, the Giallorossi have been in good form following the departure of Jose Mourinho in January.
Under Daniele De Rossi's management, Roma have climbed to 6th position in the league table, despite a bitter 2:4 loss to the top-ranked Inter Milan two weeks ago. Over the weekend, the capital side trounced modest Frosinone 0:3 with goals from Haizen, Azmun and Paredes. It should be noted that the hosts perform very convincingly in front of their home crowd, losing only one of their last 15 home matches (to Inter).
Feyenoord were unable to maintain the slim lead they held at the end of the first half and had to settle for a draw with Roma in front of their home fans (1:1). The Dutch team came only 3rd in their Champions League group, yielding playoff spots to Atletico Madrid and Lazio, but leaving Celtic behind. In the Dutch championship, Feyenoord are significantly behind PSV in points and currently hold only the 2nd position – the gap spans ten points.
This past Sunday, Feyenoord won their third consecutive Eredivisie match – against RKC Waalwijk (1:0), having previously dealt with AZ Alkmaar (0:1) and Sparta Rotterdam (2:0) in the derby. One fact that will hardly please the club's fans: coach Arne Slot's charges haven't won a single one of their last nine away matches in European competitions.
These teams have been meeting each other on a regular basis in recent years. Roma defeated Feyenoord in the Conference League final a couple of seasons back, and last spring the Giallorossi came out on top against Rotterdam in the semi-finals of the Europa League (losing 1:0 in the first match, winning 4:1 in the return leg).
Roma have been delighting fans with their performances at the Olimpico and can count on their full squad, including important centre backs Smalling and Ndicka. The Dutch side did not leave a particularly strong impression in the first leg, and I have already written about their poor European away record. I am not expecting any surprises here and am backing a Roma win with a 0 handicap.
Roma boast a truly powerful frontline and will besiege the opponent's goal from the first minutes. The hosts have every chance of scoring at least twice - as they have done in six of their last seven matches at the Olimpico.
Roma will be in control of the game and gain an advantage in all the key aspects, including corners.
Neither side wants to exit the tournament at such an early playoff stage, so sparks will be flying on the pitch. A confident bet would be to place on the total number of yellow cards over 3.5 (there were five a week ago).
I'm going for a precise score of 2:1 in favour of Roma.
