The Houston Astros are aiming to improve their performance in games against the Chicago White Sox. Tonight, the first match of the series will take place. The Astros have faced some challenges this year, which has resulted in their third position in the AL West with a 33-39 record. The White Sox, on the other hand, are one of the worst teams in the league with a 19-54 record.
Despite their issues, Houston has shown decent results in offence, ranking fourth in the league with a team OPS of 0.736 and averaging 4.43 runs per game. Left-hander Framber Valdez (5-4, 3.99 ERA) will be pitching for the Astros tonight. Last year against Chicago, he pitched five scoreless innings and allowed six hits. With all the injuries that have piled up, Valdez simply must deliver a quality start.
The Chicago White Sox have slightly improved their performance but still remain at the bottom in almost all metrics. For example, they rank 29th in the league with a team OPS of 0.631 and 3.14 runs per game. Jonathan Cannon (0-1, 4.56) should take the mound from the start. The right-hander is ranked 11th in the organisation's prospect rankings. Cannon will be facing the Astros for the first time in his career, making this an interesting matchup.
Both starting pitchers have shown good results lately, but Framber Valdez has a more complete track record and should noticeably outperform in this game. While Cannon has impressed everyone with his pitching arsenal, he has yet to pass the test of distance. Though Houston’s bullpen has been unstable throughout the season, the players have recently been gaining form and playing more confidently. In a game between teams of different calibre, Houston should secure the victory, and a -1.5 run handicap looks quite reasonable.
There is little faith in the White Sox's batting, whereas Houston could perform well. However, a total of 9 runs is quite high for the Astros alone to handle. Therefore, even with Chicago’s help, it should not be exceeded.
