CS GO Titles: All the ranks, how to level up

What are the ranks in CS GO?

In CS GO, the rank represents the rating and skill of the player in competitive game modes. There are 18 ranks in CS GO. In the ranked mode, participants play against and along with players of various ranks. The rank range is +-5 from the current one.

CS GO Ranks

The result of non-ranked matches does not affect the rank of battle enthusiasts.

To get the first rank, users go through calibration.

Before 2021, to open the calibration, shooter enthusiasts reached the second level of the account - they scored 5000 experience points.

In 2021, an update was released - the developers changed the principle of access to matchmaking.

In 2025 e-sports, professionals and enthusiasts play up to 5 games in "Standard" or "Deathmatch" modes. The number of games depends on the number of battles in which the player made it to the top-3 in terms of points scored.

Players receive their first CS GO rank after winning ten ranked matches.

During the calibration stage, you can only win two games a day. After 2 victories, CS GO will issue a ban on matchmaking for 21 hours, with other gameplay modes being accessible.

How to rank up in CS: GO

Unlike other competitive games, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive or CS GO does not have a transparent rating and MMR system.

For instance, in Dota 2, participants can secure a 25-point increase or decrease based on victory or defeat. A player’s standing in the rating table can change at any moment.

The rating in CS GO functions via the Gliko-2 system. Other relevant information is a result of computations and statistical data collected from active members of the CS GO community.

How Gliko-2 Works

Gliko-2 does not assign a specific value to a player but instead provides a range of values.

A player can gain more MMR points by defeating a stronger opponent. A defeat against a lesser opponent will result in a more significant points deduction.

Another significant aspect of the Gliko-2 system is the length of time a player retains a rank. The longer a player performs, the harder it becomes to gain a rank increase.

Additional Factors Affecting Ratings

The factors of the rating system affecting rank increases include:

  • MVP;
  • K/D Ratio;
  • match duration.

Based on the results of each round, one participant from the winning team is awarded MVP status. The more MVPs earned, the higher the chance CS GO will enhance the player's rating.

Should a victory occur without any MVP points collected, CS: GO will still consider the match won.

The K/D Ratio measures kills and deaths, a crucial indicator of individual skill.

If the team members demonstrate a high K/D ratio in a winning game, it won't affect their rating — CS:GO will interpret that the opponents were considerably weaker.

If a participant's K/D ratio significantly exceeds the team's overall ratio in a lost game, the system might upgrade the player's rank, even after a defeat.

The Gliko-2 system considers the damage dealt to opponents in its computation of the K/D ratio. High inflicted damage with a low K/D ratio indicates that a player's shooting skills and headshots are inadequate. CS:GO will regard that as hostile towards ranking advancement.

The duration of the game — the number of rounds necessary for the team to secure victory. Ideally, you would want to win with a 16:0 score.

After calibration, the system prioritizes long, full-fledged battles with opponents for initial games.

Is Victory Compulsory?

Gliko-2 is a complex system that generates numerous contradictions. For example, until 2018, victories sometimes saw players downranked. Players can still earn promotions with a draw or loss.

A popular theory among shooter fans is that rating changes are determined before the match begins, and some players experience an illogical rank increase after a loss or draw.

Strategies to Boost Your Ranking

Playing in sync as a team is your top bet for boosting your rank. A key strategy to increase your chance of achieving a higher ranking is selecting team members whose rank is at least four rankings higher than yours. This way, the system takes into the account that you're playing matches with an overall higher average rank, necessitating your own rank to be bumped up.

The big focus is on snagging those victories and acquiring MVP (Most Valuable Player) statuses in the rounds. However, accruing points will prove to be an uphill battle in a squad where teammates are outperforming you significantly.

A gamer opting for casual game modes over ranked ones within a month triggers the Gliko-2 system to analyze their gameplay statistics and dish out a confidence rank.

Fellow CS GO enthusiasts have been known to intentionally deflate their Gliko-2 confidence status- simply by not firing up the game for at least a month.

Pull off a stellar gameplay session after taking a hit on confidence, bring home some MVP titles and maintain a high K/D (Kill/Death) Ratio, and you might just see your ranking getting a nice bump up.

The peculiarities of the Gliko-2 system push some players to open fresh accounts and undergo the calibration process anew. In a few instances, this ends up securing them a higher rank.

Calibration

Here's what you need to know about calibration. Calibration is a critical part of the professionally competitive gaming scene. This process accurately gauges a player’s skill level and places them in an appropriate league or bracket. Critical to an esports professional’s career, calibration matches allow the player to demonstrate their level of expertise. It measures competitive prowess conducted under rigorous conditions, akin to an athlete qualifying for a particular sports team or event position.

Remember, excellent calibration combines the appropriate theoretical understanding, masterful execution, and seasoned experience. Like in traditional sports, where the meticulous calibration of equipment and plays ensures top-notch performance, in professional esports gaming, player calibration is critical to match equity and fair competition. So go out there, bring your A-game and conquer the circuits! Anything else you need to know, reach out. We're here to turn gamers into champions!"

After the initial non-rated CS GO matches, a player is assigned to one of 18 skill groups. Calibration helps establish an accurate rating - from the first round, the system determines what rank to assign to the user at the end of calibration.

The highest achievable ranking during calibration is "Legendary Eagle".

Users have complained that after the year 2022, it seems impossible to achieve a rank higher than "Master Guardian 1" during calibration.

How to swiftly elevate your ranking post-calibration

Within the professional gaming world of CS:GO, an anti-boost mechanism is enforced. Following the conclusion of calibration, if a player scores multiple consecutive wins with a high K/D Ratio and a substantial amount of MVPs, the system sequentially assigns new ranks to the participant for every three victories.

This effective approach enables the precise categorization of gamers matching their skill rating. Here are some key factors considered by the anti-boost system:

- Round counts,
- Team up with friends,
- Losses.

Contrary to Gliko-2, the anti-boost system offers more precise skill evaluation for matches that go the distance, hitting the maximum round limit.

Coupled with high statistical performance, a stark gap of at least four ranks when gaming with friends will signal to the system that a user isn't playing at their genuine rank. A word to the wise, tread carefully with back-to-back losses. In such unfavourable situations, delivering performance statistics that outclass your teammates is essential.

Service Medal

Upon reaching the coveted 40th rank in CS GO, players have the opportunity to reset their progress and earn a service medal as a badge of honour. These service medals serve as cosmetic items, having no in-game value yet demonstrating the time a player has dedicated to the game.

After resetting the rank, players begin anew, garnering experience. Achieving the 40th rank a second time opens up another avenue to reset ranks and earn an additional service medal. The practice of awarding service medals in CS GO originated in 2015, where combatants were awarded a maximum of 2 medals. Since 2016, shooter enthusiasts have obtained up to 6 service medals annually.

The medals are categorized by colour, corresponding to the order they are gained:

- The first medal is white.
- The second is a verdant green.
- The third medal is cobalt blue.
- The fourth medal comes in a shade of royal purple.
- The fifth medal is coloured pink.
- The last, sixth medal boasts a vibrant red hue. In the inaugural year of 2015, players received a blue and purple medal.

Notably, in the CS GO files, black service medals for the years 2016 and 2017 were discovered, although no player globally has managed to earn these elusive black medals. Apart from the service medals, CS GO offers the chance to earn medals for years of service and special operations. However, these accolades merely offer a cosmetic effect. Prime Status

Following Valve Corporation making CS:GO free-to-play, gamers have been availed the opportunity to earn Prime Status with specific perks.

The game providers have overhauled the Prime system and its earning conditions many times.

The perks that come with Prime Status include:

  • access to competitive play;
  • achievable titles;
  • attainable ranks;
  • rewards in the form of in-game items;
  • ability to play alongside other Prime holders.

Limitations

The gaming performance and experience points accrued by a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO) player is significantly influenced by the chosen game mode. In a Competitive match setting, players rake in about 30 experience points for each victorious round.

When engaged in the 'Wingman' mode, on the other hand, the catch is 15 points. In other modes, the amount of experience gathered is primarily tied to the player’s score in a match. To maximize their XP accumulation, strategic players commit to seeing a match through to its conclusion, without imploring their opponents to throw in the towel. However, it's essential to remember that XP accrual in CSGO operates within two key constraints:

- A cap of 1000 points per match.
- A weekly limit of 11720 points.

Upon accumulating the maximum limit of 11720 points, the system modifies its XP allotment, continuing to award players at 17.5% of the standard amount. For instance, a victorious round in a Competitive mode match will, at this point, be rewarded with 5.25 experience points instead of the typical 30.
