In the 1/16 finals of the championships in Tokyo on hard ground, Harriet Dart from Great Britain will compete with Veronika Kudermetova from Russia. We're backing Dart with a five-game handicap.
27-year-old Harriet Dart, world ranking 155, successfully passed the qualification to the tournament in Tokyo, defeating Ishii with a score of 4:6, 6:1, 6:3 and Kalashnikova 6:0, 6:4. She earlier participated in Guangzhou, where she also made it through the qualification round, defeating Xuliu Sun and Savinykh, and in the main draw defeated Niemeyer but fell to Minnen.
In three previous tournaments, Dart won one match each. In Osaka and Tokyo, she handled Fruhvirtova and Udvardi, but lost to Kalinskaya and Hartono. At the US Open she couldn't make it to the main draw of the tournament, losing to Wickmayer. At three tournaments before that, in Barcelona, Portugal and Wimbledon, she was defeated in the first matches by Chong, Corneeva and Parry, while at the championship in Eastbourne she beat Zhang Shuai but then fell to Ostapenko.
Previously, Dart showed great play at the tournament in Birmingham, where she made it to the third round. She defeated Berrey with a score of 4:6, 6:2, 7:5 and then overshadowed Kalinina 6:3, 3:6, 6:1, but later lost to Potapova with a score of 6:4, 3:6, 4:6. In Nottingham, Harriet successfully passed two qualifying matches, beat Inglis and Silva, and in the main draw, defeated Marino and Kalinina, with no slip of a set, but then fell to Butler in the quarterfinals.
In early May, at the tournament in Nottingham on hard court, Dart exhibited excellent play and came out victorious. As part of the championship, she managed to conquer Soshtak, Stojber, Belgraver, Rodionova and Preston, without conceding a set in these matches. However, in other tournaments, the athlete didn't get beyond the second rounds, save the championships in Calvi in April and Murska-Sobota in March on hard ground, where she reached quarterfinals.
26-year-old Veronika, ranked 19th in the world tennis rankings, previously participated in the tournament in Guadalajara, where she overcame Bouchard with a score of 6:2, 6:7 (4:7), 6:4, but lost to Azarenka 2:6, 1:6. Prior to this, the tennis player faced failures and lost in six of the eight matches, and in San Diego, at the US Open and in Cincinnati, she was defeated in the first rounds by Kenin, Pera and Williams.
In July, Kudermetova took part in Wimbledon, where she triumphed over Kanepi with a score of 7:6 (7:4), 6:4, but then lost to Vondrousova 3:6, 3:6. At the tournament in Berlin, she reached the quarterfinals, surpassing Zhen 6:4, 6:2 and Sabalenka 6:2, 7:6 (7:2), but had to withdraw from the match against Alexandrova. In June, Veronika made it to the final of the championship in Hertogenbosch, conquering Riske-Amritraj, who refused to continue playing when the score was 6:3, 3:0, Zhao 6:1, 6:3, Naaf 6:3, 6:2 and Grunchakova with a score of 6:3, 6:2, but lost to Alexandrova in the final with a score of 6:4, 4:6, 6:7 (3:7).
At the French Open earlier, Veronika failed to overcome the first round, losing to Schmiedlova with a score of 3:6, 1:6, and in May she reached the semifinals in Rome but fell to Kalinina. She displayed a high-level game within the tournament, defeating Parry, Potapova, Bouzkova and Zhen. At the tournament in Madrid, Kudermetova also put on a great show and reached the semi-finals where she lost to Świątek, but before this championship she had experienced a series of failures, losing in 6 out of 7 matches.
Previously the players have met twice, and in every match Kudermetova secured the victory.
