In a 1/16 final match of the championship on hard courts in Chengdu, Russia's Roman Safiullin will face Brandon Nakashima of the USA. Our prediction leans toward a total over.
26-year-old Roman Safiullin, currently the world's 55th, previously participated in the US Open. He claimed victory over Checchinato with scores of 6:4, 6:2, 6:0, but fell short against Paul 6:3, 6:2, 2:6, 4:6, 3:6. Before that, Safiullin struggled with a series of losses, surrendering to Cerundolo 6:7 (5:7), 6:3, 3:6, and Harris 6:4, 3:6, 3:6 in matches at tournaments in Winston-Salem and Cincinnati. Nonetheless, Safiullin presented fabulous form at Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinals. Throughout the contest, he overcame Bautista-Agut with scores of 2:6, 7:6 (9:7), 6:7 (4:7), 6:4, 7:5, Moutet 7:5, 6:3, 7:6 (7:4), Pella 7:6 (7:1), 6:4, 6:0 and Shapovalov 3:6, 6:3, 6:1, 6:3, before admitting defeat to Sinner with 4:6, 6:3, 2:6, 2:6.
In late June, Safiullin successfully qualified in a tournament in Mallorca, defeating Moro Canas 7:5, 6:1 and McKee 7:5, 4:6, 7:6 (7:5). Safiullin ascended in the main grid beating Shelbayh 6:1, 6:4, but lost the next round to Harris 6:7 (5:7), 3:6. Another tournament in Halle in June also brought successful qualification for Safiullin, but later he admitted defeat to Struff in the first round.
Safiullin demonstrated magnificent play in clay tournaments in Rome and Madrid, claiming victories in four matches including two victories in qualifying bouts, and reached the third rounds. He defeated Sousa, Kopriva, Hirona, and Korda in Rome, but conceded to Popyrin. After unsuccessful performances in Miami, Monte Carlo and Banya Luka in April, Safiullin regained form at a tournament in Madrid. He successfully qualified beating Sousa and Ofner, and claimed victories in the main grid overing Harry and Paul, but lost the next fight against Zapata Miralles. In early February, Safiullin claimed victory at the Challenger tournament in Koblenz, defeating Blancano, Escofie, Vatutin, Collignon and Pospisil.
22-year-old Brandon, currently ranked 81st in the world, previously appeared at the US Open, where he lost in the first round to Djère 5:7, 4:6, 4:6. Before that, he reached the third round in Winston-Salem, overcoming Kubler and Fills, but conceding to Gasquet. Since late May, Brandon Nakashima has played 13 matches with only two victories. At tournaments in Cincinnati, Toronto, Wimbledon, Eastbourne, Hertogenbosch and the French Open, he fell in the first rounds to Vavrinka, Lekhecka, Thompson, Vukic, Ruusuvuori and Shapovalov.
At the end of May, Nakashima delivered a strong performance at the Lyon tournament, reaching the semifinals, where he was beaten by Fills. During the tournament, Nakashima claimed victories against Paul with a score of 6:3, 7:6 (7:4), Rinderknech 7:6 (8:6), 1:6, 7:5 and Schwartzman 7:5, 6:3.
Ahead of this tournament, the tennis player suffered three consecutive losses. An injury led to him missing several games but he is gradually recovering and finding his form.
The athletes have never played against each other in the past.
Both tennis players are not in their best form, and both show inconsistent performances on hard courts. It's challenging to predetermine the winner, but we believe the match will be drawn out and we are backing a total over.
