On Sunday 5th May, in the 34th round of the Spanish Primera, Sevilla will host Granada on their turf. The team led by Quique Sánchez Flores is eager to end the campaign on a high note after a disastrous first half of the season, while the visitors are likely to confirm their relegation tonight.
The match will take place in Seville at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium.
After spending the entire season in the lower part of the league table, 13th-placed Sevilla wants to forget the current campaign as soon as possible. However, the team needs to secure their spot in the elite division for the next year, which could happen today. The hosts have found fine form in April and currently have a four-match unbeaten streak, including three consecutive victories - over Getafe (0:1), Las Palmas (0:2) and Copa del Rey finalists Mallorca (2:1).
Last weekend, the red and whites drew in the derby with Betis, failing to determine who's stronger (1:1). Isco put the 'cucumbers' ahead in the first half, but Kike Salas equalised on the 56th-minute mark. It's worth noting that the hosts are ranked sixth from the bottom in the overall league standings in terms of points earned at home (20 points in 16 matches, 23 goals scored, 24 conceded).
19th-placed Granada in La Liga table had a decent run in April: the team went three matches unbeaten, including two "dry" victories over relegation rivals Alaves (2:0) and Osasuna (3:0) last weekend. Facundo Pellistri put the team ahead in the 29th minute, and Uzuni and Boyé scored after the break. However, the Andalusians drew with Athletic Bilbao (1:1). This surge happened as José Ramón Sandoval became the club's third head coach of the season, replacing Paco López.
Nonetheless, the red-burgundy team is 10 points behind 17th-placed Celta, and then they have probably accepted the inevitable relegation to Segunda.
It's important to note that Granada is the absolute worst team in La Primera in terms of points earned away from home, with only 3 in 16 visits and 13 goals scored against 35 conceded.
Sevilla have won the last two meetings between these teams, scoring at least 3 goals (4:2 two years ago, 0:3 in the first round of the current campaign away).
Sevilla is gradually regaining its old form and seeks to brighten up a disappointing season with a decent ending. Granada is making a last-ditch effort to battle for survival, going unbeaten in their last three rounds, but their rescue seems almost unimaginable - and the players probably know this. Given the results between these clubs lately, I'm backing a staple home win.
Granada is conceding more than two goals per game away on average, while Sevilla scores twice per match on average. Boldly betting on the favourite's individual total over 1.5 goals.
Sevilla is in fine form and outclasses the opponent - it's clear that the hosts will play on the front foot and will win the corner count with a handicap of -1.5.
Granada will have to defend a lot and hence, will be forced to foul frequently. I'm backing the underdog to win the yellow card count.
I'm betting on an exact score of 2:1 in favour of Sevilla.
