On Saturday, 20 April, in the framework of the 32nd round of the Spanish La Liga, Girona will host Cadiz on their home ground. The hosts hold the third place in the league table, four points ahead of the trailing Madrid Atletico, while the "pirates" are languishing in the relegation zone, trailing Celta by three points.
Like Atletico Bilbao, Girona lost points in the last round, undermining their chances of qualifying for the Champions League. However, unlike the Basques, the Catalans still have a lead over their pursuers and can finish in the top-4. Nevertheless, a recent defeat to Madrid Atletico at the Wanda (3:1) will most likely put an end to the red-and-white's hopes for second place. In general, the white burgundy team has lost five of their last 10 league matches, winning four and drawing one. Fortunately for the fans of this modest club, in 2024 the hosts are still unbeatable at their own stadium, winning three matches in a row - against Rayo Vallecano (3:0), Osasuna (2:0) and Betis (3:2). Furthermore, Michel's charges can boast the third-best home record in the division - 38 points in 15 duels.
What is even more impressive is the number of goals scored at the Montilivi stadium: Girona have netted 38 goals and are the most effective home team in La Liga this campaign. The Catalans have several highly promising talents such as Yan Couto (8 assists in the championship), Ukrainian Dovbyk (17 goals, 5 assists, top scorer of La Liga) and Brazilian Savio (8 goals, 7 assists), on loan from Troyes. All of them are likely to start, but injuries to Artero, Roki and Ukrainian midfielder Tsygankov (6 goals, 4 assists in La Liga) must be noted. On the other hand, Ivan Martin (4 goals, 2 assists) is back from suspension, and experienced striker Cristian Stuani is ready to boost the game coming off the bench in the second half.
Cadiz (18th place in the league table) is dangerously close to relegation at the end of the campaign. Earlier on Saturday, Celta, the main rival of the "pirates" for survival, will host Las Palmas at home and, depending on the outcome of the match, the yellow-blues could equalise in points with the "Celtics", if they win in Catalonia. However, before looking at other teams, the visitors should think about their own results. For instance, last weekend the underdog lost 0:1 to Barcelona following a brilliant goal by Joao Felix. Prior to this defeat, Cadiz clinched a hard-fought but crucial 1:0 victory over Granada, who are 19th placed. The "yellow submarine" is in its fourth season in the elite division, the best result for the club since the early 1990s.
Cadiz is third from last in the current campaign for points accrued away (just 6 in 15 matches) and has not been able to achieve a single victory away from home since the start of the championship! The visitors' squad is more depleted than that of Girona: Luis Hernandez, Jose Mari, Kuame and Fede San Emeterio will be missing on Saturday. Uruguayan Gomes (25 La Liga matches, 0 goals, 0 assists) did not recover in time either from a minor injury. The "pirates" will also have to cope without left-back Javi Hernandez, who is suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards - he will be replaced by Lucas Pires. Chris Ramos (5 goals, top scorer) is likely to appear at the spearhead of the attack along with experienced Machis (4 goals).
At the start of this season the "pirates" lost at home to Girona 0:1, but in the home match of the 2022-23 campaign they drew 1:1 with the Catalans.
Despite all away difficulties, the Catalans still have an unbeaten record at home in 2024 and are fighting for a finish among the top three. Cadiz, of course, is motivated by survival, but the recent results of the "pirates" are far from impressive, and the overcrowded infirmary certainly won't strengthen the visitors. I'm backing a home victory for the favourite with a handicap of -1.
