On Saturday, 13th April, as part of the 31st round of the Spanish La Liga, Mallorca will host Real Madrid on their home ground. Last week, Los Blancos drew 3:3 with Manchester City in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, whereas the Islanders conceded to Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final during a penalty shootout.
Mallorca: Rajkovic; Gonzalez, Valjent, Raillo, Nastasic, J Costa; Darder, S Costa, Sanchez; Muriqi, Larin.
Real Madrid: Lunin; Vazquez, Militao, Nacho, F Garcia; Ceballos, Tchouameni, Modric; Bellingham; Vinicius, Brahim.
Mallorca came close to success in the Copa del Rey final last weekend, but succumbed to a loss against Athletic Bilbao, a team who has been chasing this trophy for over 40 years (1:1 after extra time, 2:4 in a penalty shootout). Now, the Yellow-Reds will have to face reality and quickly pull themselves together to avoid a drop to the Segunda: currently, they are just six points ahead of 18th-placed Cadiz in the tournament table.
The team from Palma, however, has had a decent run lately: in their last five rounds, they only lost to Barcelona away (1:0). Since then, Javier Aguirre's men beat Granada (1:0) and drew with Valencia (0:0). It's worth noting that the Pirates rank a respectable 11th in the total number of home points obtained (22 in 15 home matches, with 14 goals scored and 12 conceded).
The defending La Liga leader, having suffered just one defeat this season, is closer than ever to its 36th national championship title. However, this week Los Blancos' focus has been on the Champions League: the quarterfinal clash against Manchester City at Santiago Bernabéu ended in a bright 3:3 draw, with the return leg scheduled for next Wednesday.
In La Liga, Carlo Ancelotti's charges have secured three consecutive wins before the mini-break - triumphs over Celta Vigo (4:0), Osasuna (2:4), and Athletic Bilbao (2:0). Real Madrid boasts the best away stat in La Liga this season: the "Royal Club" collected 34 points in 15 matches away from home with 29 goals scored and 13 conceded.
In the first round at Bernabéu, Real Madrid didn't shine but got the job done (a 1:0 victory). However, the preceding match of these teams in Palma ended with a victory for the Islanders by the same score.
Several days after a bright performance against Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinals, Real Madrid will have to return to the daily routine of La Liga, and doubts are understandably raised about the physical fitness of Los Blancos after the midweek energy-sapping clash with the Cityzens. Mallorca is fighting for survival and performs very well on their home ground, so it makes sense to back the underdog's handicap 1.
Ancelotti will most likely rest all his attacking leaders, although even with them, Real have only scored one goal in their last two meetings against Mallorca. My prediction - the visitors' individual total will be under 2.
With the support of the home crowd, Mallorca certainly won't shy away from attacking and at least occasionally threatening the opponent's goal - I'm betting on the Islanders' individual total to be over 4.5 corners.
The hosts will have plenty of fouling to do, regularly disrupting the tempo of the classier opponent's attacks - confidently backing the Yellow-Reds to win the yellow cards battle.
I'm backing a 1:1 draw.
