On Saturday, 30 March, in the 30th round of the Spanish La Liga, Valencia will host Mallorca. The home side, Valencia, heads into the international break following a 1:0 defeat by Villarreal, while the Islanders secured a win over Granada and are eight points clear from the relegation zone.
Valencia: Mamardashvili; Foulquier, Mosquera, Ozakacar, Correia; Perez, Pepelu, Guillamon, Guerra; Duro, Yaremchuk.
Mallorca: Rajkovic; Maffeo, Gonzalez, Nastasic, Copete, Lato; Sanchez, Mascarell, Costa; Larin, Muriqi.
Settled in the lower half of the table in recent years, Valencia is slowly clawing back its status in the battle for European competition. Coming into match day 30 in eighth place, the six-time Spanish champions are just six points shy of the leading six, with eight games left in the season. It's still possible, but they need to accumulate as many points as possible, starting from Saturday evening. Prior to the international break, Los Che failed to score against Villarreal, suffering a minimal 1:0 defeat.
This loss was a minor headache for Blanquinegros, who had previously been on a three-match unbeaten streak, including a draw against Real Madrid (2:2) and a victory over Getafe (1:0). It's important to note that Valencia has been performing well at Mestalla, with 28 points from 14 home games and only two defeats. Jose Gaya, the captain and starting left-back, left the field on the 40th minute in the last match and is unlikely to participate in this game.
Mallorca, one of the two contenders for triumph in the upcoming Copa del Rey final, managed to eliminate favourites Girona in the quarterfinals (3:2) and Real Sociedad in the semifinals during the course of the tournament. Success in the Copa del Rey has helped the Islanders gain good momentum in La Liga, where they suffered just one defeat in their last five rounds.
After beating Catalonia's Girona (1:0), the yellow-orange Mallorca lost to Barcelona (1:0) and then clinched a victory over struggling Granada, thanks to a late goal from Antonio Raillo, settling them firmly in the 14th place overall. It's noteworthy that Javier Aguirre's charges have not fared well away from home in the current La Liga campaign, having clinched just one victory in 14 away matches and managing to score only 11 goals away from their own stadium.
Valencia has not defeated Mallorca in the Spanish Championship since February 2022, losing two of the last three confrontations including a 1:1 draw in the first half.
Valencia still harbours chances in the race to finish in the European zone, but a slip-up this Saturday is simply impermissible - they're already six points adrift. Mallorca, who participates in the Copa del Rey final in a week, have won three of the last five league matches, gathering good momentum in March. These teams have drawn twice in their last five head-to-head encounters, providing good grounds to even expect similar outcomes at Mestalla.
In the last two rounds, both teams have finished their matches with an identical score of 1:0. Neither side is known for attack-oriented football, preferring defensive solidity to an entertaining show. We're bravely placing our bet on a total score of under 2.5 goals.
As the rightful home side, Valencia will be the dominant force and will definitely be more offensive in nature. So, we're backing Los Che's victory in the corner match-up.
Valencia averages just 1.8 yellow cards per game, while the visitors average 2.8. It seems reasonable to back the Islanders for the victory in cards.
Our bet is on an exact score of 0:0.
