On Friday, 29 March, within the framework of the 30th round of the Spanish Primera, Cadiz will host Granada on its own field. The "Pirates" are five points behind the safety-line 17th place, whilst the white-reds have already reconciled themselves to the inevitability of relegation, having suffered three consecutive defeats in March.
Cadiz in March achieved their first victory since 1 September in the championship, beating Atletico Madrid at home (2:0). However, immediately after this unexpected triumph, the "pirate ship" succumbed with the same score to "Real Sociedad". Overall, the yellow-blues have achieved only three victories in the current campaign, played a draw 13 times, and suffered 13 defeats in 29 rounds, landing in the 18th place in the league table with 22 points. Trailing five points behind Celta, holding the 17th safety-line position, they need to garner points urgently. Noteworthy is that the charges of Mauricio Pellegrino have collected 16 out of the 22 points at home and have conceded only four times in front of their own fans throughout the season.
Interesting fact: the hosts are running their fourth consecutive season in the Spanish football elite, which is their best result since the beginning of the 1990s. Maximiliano Gomez (24 matches) got injured in the match against "Sociedad" and is unlikely to recover by Friday, while Fede San-Emeterio (rupture of the cruciate ligaments), Luis Hernandez and Roger Marti certainly will not participate in the match because of a fracture of the fibula. Chris Ramos, scoring 5 goals in the current campaign, most likely will take place at the forefront of the attack, along with Darwin Machis. Robert Navarro will support them on the flank.
Granada, the current Segunda champion, is having a rough time this season: the team trails the 17th safe spot by 13 points. This handicap is virtually impossible to overcome, considering that the white-reds have won only one of the last 25 La Liga matches and are in a terrible state - they have not won in nine rounds, with six defeats, including three consecutive defeats before the international break. These losses came against Villarreal (5:1), Real Sociedad (2:3), and Mallorca (1:0). As a result of the calamitous outcomes, Alexander Medina was dismissed from the head coach position on March 19; Jose Ramon Sandoval returned to the helm. Obviously, a Friday debacle would mean relegation for the Andalusians. It's important to point out the guests have the worst defensive record in La Liga, having let in 58 goals in 28 rounds.
Furthermore, Granada are the absolute worst Primera team on the road, having attained only 2 points in 14 away matches. The team is hoping for the return of key midfielder Sergio Ruiz, who served a red card suspension in the last round. Argentine striker Lucas Boye is out due to injury, however, the rest of the players are prepared to go on the field. The coaching staff is counting on second division top scorer Uzuni (9 goals), while Bryan Zaragoza (6 goals in the first half of the season) moved to Bayern Munich during the winter transfer window. Facundo Pellistri is expected to feature again on the left flank of the attack, with Kamil Jozwiak likely playing on the opposite side.
Granada will aim for a double over Cadiz this season, having won 2:0 in the first round in January.
This match is pivotal for both teams: the losing side will practically be on the brink of relegation, especially if Celta bags all three points during the weekend. And here, the home advantage might come into play favouring the hosts, especially considering the yellow-blues recently overcame Atletico Madrid with a scoreline of 2:0. Given that Granada rank as the worst away performers in Primera, we confidently place a bet on the victory of the "pirates" with a handicap of 0.
