On Thursday, the 25th of January, as part of the Spanish Cup quarter-finals, Atletico will host Sevilla on their home ground. A week ago, the "Mattress-makers" knocked out Real Madrid in the previous round of the tournament with a score of 4:2, while the southerners defeated Getafe (1:3) and briefly distracted from their problems in the league.
Atletico: Oblak; Savic, Gimenez, Hermoso; Molina, Koke, De Paul, Saul, Lino; Morata, Griezmann.
Sevilla: Dmitrovic; Navas, Marcao, Ramos, Pedrosa; Jordan, Sow, Rakitic; Lamela, Romero, Ocampos.
The match will take place in Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
Atletico managed to return to the top four La Liga teams on Monday evening, defeating crisis-ridden Almeria (0:1) away thanks to a goal from Alvaro Morata. This victory also allowed the Madrid side to recover from their defeat in early January against Girona (4:3), which leads the overall standings. Two weeks ago, Simeone's wards did not fare well at the Spanish Super Cup, losing to Real with an overall score of 5:3 after extra time.
However, a couple of days later, the "mattress-makers" took their revenge on Los Blancos in the 1/8 finals of the Copa del Rey (4:2 after extra time): the teams scored twice during the 90 minutes, and in extra time everything was decided by the goals of Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme. However, it's been more than a year since Simeone's wards stumbled at home – the last failure occurred on January 8, 2023, in a match against Barcelona.
The Copa del Rey remains Sevilla's last hope of bagging a ticket to the European cups, as it is obvious that the visitors have already given up hope of making it into the top seven in La Liga. The team occupies a catastrophic 17th place in the league table, just one point away from the relegation zone. This critical situation for the Andalusians is exacerbated by their departure from the Champions League in December after finishing fourth in their group.
Last weekend, Sevilla suffered a fiasco from Girona with a score of 5:1 and has already lost four matches in a row in the league. In the previous round of the national cup, the southerners dealt with Getafe away (1:3) – Sergio Ramos opened the scoring, and Isaac Romero scored a double. Even earlier, Kike Flores' charges passed Quintanar, Atletico Astorga, and Racing Ferrol.
Simeone's team have won three consecutive victories over Sevilla in La Liga. Before Christmas, the "mattress-makers" won at home with a score of 1:0, and 10 months ago they thrashed "Los Palanganas" in the capital – 6:1.
This season, Sevilla is doing so poorly (exit from Europe, proximity to the relegation zone in the league) that their victorious march in the Copa del Rey looks like an exception to the rule. At the same time, Atletico is having one of their most successful campaigns and has not known defeat for over a year at home. I don't see how Kike Flores' men could take any points away from Wanda Metropolitano – my bet is on a home win with a handicap of -1.
Atletico has scored 23 goals in 10 home games in La Liga and has one of the strongest attacking lines now that previously injured leaders have returned to action. I expect at least two goals from the "mattress-makers".
As paradoxical as it may sound, Atletico has a rate of just 4.5 corners per game this season, while the visitors' figure stands at 6. I'll risk betting that Sevilla will at least keep up in terms of corners taken.
In late December, these teams met each other in the league and collected 10 yellow cards between them. I confidently bet on an overall total of more than 4.5 yellow cards.
I predict a final score of 3:1 in favor of Atletico.
