On Tuesday, 16th January, as part of the Copa del Rey last-16, Getafe will host Sevilla on home ground. The two sides are separated by 10 points in La Liga, with the hosts having a significant edge over their Andalusian rivals – however, both collected hard-fought single-goal victories in the previous round of the competition.
Getafe: Soria; Iglesias, Alderete, Alvarez, Rico; Carmona, Milla, Maksimovic, Greenwood; Latasa, Mayoral.
Sevilla: Dmitrovic; Juanlu, Marcao, Ramos, Salas; Suso, Rakitic, Sow, Pedrosa; Ocampos, Mir.
The clash will take place in Getafe at the Coliseum Stadium.
Having reached the Copa del Rey finals in 2007 and 2008, Getafe has never lifted the trophy in their history. Given their impressive first half of the season in La Liga, the hosts could well make some noise in this year's tournament draw. Currently, the Azulones sit at a respectable 10th place in the La Liga table, and they did not have a match last weekend due to Osasuna's participation in the Spanish Super Cup.
In the previous Copa del Rey round, the Madrid-based side edged out Catalan Espanyol in a minimum-scoring encounter (0:1), with the deciding goal coming from Milla on the 87th minute. This allowed Jose Bordalas' charges to bounce back after falling to Rayo Vallecano at the start of 2024, when Mason Greenwood, Damian Suarez and Juanmi Latasa were all sent off. It's worth noting that at home in La Liga, Getafe have lost only once, averaging two points per game on the Coliseum field.
After exiting the Champions League race (4th place), Sevilla can now concentrate on rectifying their domestic situation and the Copa del Rey, looking to clinch the trophy and return to the Europa League next year. Unlike their upcoming opponents, the visitors played a La Liga match this past weekend and suffered another loss, this time to Alaves (2:3).
Flores' side sits in the La Liga table with just 16 points, one more than relegation-threatened Cadiz. Sevilla won the Copa del Rey in 2007 and 2010, and in this year's tournament, they scraped past modest Ferrol in the last round courtesy of a late goal from Juanlu Sanchez. Goalkeepers Vacas and Nyland are also on the injured list, while Youssef En-Nesyri (5 La Liga goals) is away for the Africa Cup of Nations with Morocco.
Earlier this season, Getafe outclassed Sevilla 0:3 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan – although Sevilla had previously enjoyed a seven-match winning run against the Madrid outfit.
The Copa del Rey is Sevilla's last shot to snag a place in European competitions. However, given the visitors' form and their meagre 16 points from 20 league rounds, it's hard to foresee a positive outcome for Flores' men. Moreover, Getafe approach the game in better physical condition and optimised squad, and their direct encounter in La Liga showcased who's having a superior season campaign. My prediction is a home win with a 0-handicap.
Getafe has been enjoying an unusually bold season, averaging 1.5 goals per match. Considering all of Sevilla's issues, it seems rational to bet on the host's ITO more than 1 goal.
The visitors average two more corners per game than their upcoming opponent. I expect this pattern to persist on Tuesday.
I foresee a match rich in fouls: the hosts average 4 cautions per match, the visitors – three. I go for a TU of yellow cards more than 4.5.
I'll go with a precise score of 2:1 in favour of Getafe.
