On Monday, 2 October, as part of the 8th round of the Spanish Primera, "Las Palmas" will host "Celta" on their home turf. Both teams have accumulated five points each, sharing the 17th/18th spots in the league table. Therefore, the upcoming match could be crucial in the fight for survival.
Las Palmas: Valles; Araujo, Coco, Curbelo, Marmol; El Haddadi, K Rodriguez, Perrone, Viera, Herrera; Kaba.
Celta: Villar; Mingueza, Aidoo, Starfelt, Nunez, Ristic; Beltran, Tapia, Bamba; Aspas, Larsen.
The duel will be held in Las Palmas at the Gran Canaria Stadium.
Returning to the élite division of Spanish football after a four-year stay in Segunda, Las Palmas certainly hopes to remain there after the completion of the 38 rounds, but the start of the championship turned out to be disastrous for the Islanders: they have only one victory - 1:0 against Granada last weekend. This week, the Balearics paid a visit to Real Madrid, who had just suffered a defeat in the capital derby, and it cost them: they lost 2-0. Now, Las Palmas is in the 18th place in La Liga and is in the relegation zone. The team has lost three out of the last four matches in La Liga, but has yet to lose at home in the present campaign. Garcia Pimienta's side has scored only two goals, but it ranks second from the top in terms of defensive reliability, allowing only six goals. Atletico Madrid has allowed fewer - five goals.
Celta is also encountering problems at the start of La Liga season: they have just one victory- 2:3 away against Almeria, which is currently at the bottom of the table, in early September. On Thursday evening, the Galicians could not secure their second victory when they visited Alaves and had to settle for a 1:1 draw. Rafa Marin opened the score, and Samu equalized for Celta in the 73rd minute. This let Rafa Benitez's side escape the relegation zone due to a superior goal difference over Las Palmas. Celta finished the two previous campaigns in the prime division in 11th and 13th place, and it had not played outside La Liga since 2012. Thus, the Galicians' relegation this season would come as a surprise.
Midfielder Franco Servi was the only absentee in the team this week. Captain Iago Aspas (12 La Liga goals last season), former Lille forward Jonathan Bamba (yet to register either a goal or an assist for his new team), and striker Larsen (2 goals this season) should start the game. Celta will again miss midfielder Franco Servi due to a muscular problem, but manager Rafa Benitez is unlikely to succumb to the temptation of shuffling his line-up following Wednesday's draw.
The hosts have lost all their last three matches against Celta in the league, including a 2:5 home loss in the 2017-18 season.
Despite their issues, Las Palmas is yet to lose at home this season. The team is known for its defensive strength and could shut down their area, relying on threatening counterattacks. Celta under Benitez is rather unimpressive, and the insipid game leaves them at risk of relegation. I believe that, at the very least, the home side will be able to avoid defeat.
In the past seven head-to-heads on Canary grounds, both teams have scored. Given the stakes, both sides are in need of a victory. Therefore, I'm betting that both teams will score.
As mentioned earlier, both teams desperately need to gather points, compelling them to attack. Therefore, I'm betting on a total of over 8.5 corners.
Las Palmas has averaged 3 yellow cards per match this season. Home support and the league situation may ignite extra emotions and passion, so I'm betting on their ITO-2.5 bookings.
I'm betting on a 1:1 correct score.
