On Saturday, 30th September, as part of the 8th round of the Spanish La Liga, Getafe will host Villarreal on their home ground. The 'Yellow Submarine' have managed to collect just seven points from the initial seven matches of the championship, placing them 14th in the standings. Meanwhile, Getafe follows in 10th place, with eight points in their coffers.
Getafe: Soria; Iglesias, Duarte, Alvarez, Rico, Angileri; Greenwood, Arambarri, Maksimovic, Alena; Latasa.
Villarreal: Jorgensen; Foyth, Albiol, Mandi, A Moreno; Parejo, Capoue, Baena; Pino, Sorloth, Akhomach.
The showdown will take place in Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium.
Compared to last season, Getafe started much stronger and regularly pleases fans with positive results. This past week, the 'azulones' travelled to Bilbao, where they managed a 2:2 draw with Athletic Bilbao after a 4:3 loss to Real Sociedad the previous weekend. The hosts led the scoring twice at the San Mamés, but the team from the capital responded with their own goals, including a stunning strike by Juanmi Latasa in the 83rd minute. It's worth noting that the hosts remain unbeaten at home this campaign: they've claimed victories against Alavés (1:0) and Osasuna (3:2), and secured a draw against Barcelona (0:0) in the first round. The Blues finished in 15th place in each of the last three seasons, and were 8th, 5th, and 8th respectively from 2018 to 2020. At present, Bordalás' charges are 10th with 8 points in their pocket, just 4 points behind the Europa League spots.
Villarreal is struggling mightily this season, so much so that the club's management decided to part ways with head coach Quique Setién in early September, less than a year after his appointment. This did not prevent the 'Yellow Submarine' from continuing to sink, and this week they suffered another defeat at home to Girona (1:2). Prior to this, the guests had lost in the Europa League group stage to Panathinaikos in Greece (2:0) and then drawn 1:1 with Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. Due to these disappointing results, the team has collected only seven points and currently sits in 14th place, having only managed a victory in one of their last six matches in all competitions. Last campaign, Villarreal finished fifth, seven points shy of the top four.
Left full-back Alberto Moreno returns after serving his suspension this week. On the flip side, holding midfielder Francis Coquelin (ACL tear), Cuenca (ankle injury) and midfielder Denis Suárez will not take part in the match due to injuries. The team's top goalscorer, Gerard Moreno (2 goals this season), appears to still be struggling with physical problems and may also miss the game. Norwegian Alexander Sørloth (12 goals last season), who moved this summer to the visitors' camp following an excellent season with Real Sociedad in the Basque Country, has already become a team leader. Playmaker Baena (1 goal, 4 assists this season) and Dani Parejo, who scored the 'Submarine's' only goal in the match against Girona, are also set to start on Saturday.
Getafe have not defeated Villarreal in La Liga since January 2019, and last season the 'azulones' scraped a goalless draw on home turf.
Villarreal, to their fans' disappointment, are struggling this season and have already had a managerial change. The team has only managed a win in one of their last six matches, and a full treatment room is not enabling them to field their optimal side. While Getafe is not the picture of consistency, they've proved to be particularly strong at home, gathering seven out of nine possible points here. It's hard to see the 'submarine' snatching all three points on Saturday—I'm betting on a Getafe win or draw.
All five previous head-to-head clashes have ended with a total of fewer than 3.5 goals. Considering the visitors' attacking issues, it seems rational to back Villarreal's individual total under 1.5.
Getafe primarily builds their game around counterattacks and pays significant attention to set pieces. The hosts should be able to deliver at least 4 corners with the support of their home crowd.
The hosts are one of the most foul-prone teams in La Liga, so a win for Blue concerning yellow cards is not in doubt.
I'm going for a precise score of 1:0 in favour of Getafe.
