On Wednesday 27th September, in the 7th round of Spanish Premier League, Villarreal will be playing against Girona on Villarreal's home field. While the Catalan club is second in the overall standings, Villarreal currently ranks 12th with seven points earned from six games, having already switched managers in the course of the season.
Villarreal: Jorgensen; Foyth, Albiol, Mandi, Pedraza; Trigueros, Comesana, Capoue, Pino; Sorloth, Morales.
Girona: Gazzaniga; Couto, Lopez, E. Garcia, Blind; Tsygankov, Martin, A. Garcia, Herrera, Savio; Doybyk.
The contest will take place in Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
Villarreal endured a chaotic start to the season with three losses in their first five matches, including a shocking defeat at the hands of lowly Cadiz (3:1), not to mention the Hollywood-style thriller against defending champions - Barcelona (3:4). Kike Setién, the team's main coach, was let go during the international break, replaced by Pacheta. The yellow submarines began their Europa League campaign last Thursday with a loss against Panathinaikos (2:0), while over the weekend, it was a stalemate against Rayo Vallecano (1:1). Gerard Moreno's 15th-minute goal was instantly cancelled out by Kike Perez just 60 seconds later. Having conceded 11 goals in six league games, Villarreal must urgently fortify its defence, lest things deteriorate further. Offering little respite, the squad lost midfielder Denis Suarez in the the first half of the stand-off with Rayo.
Contrary to Villarreal's performance, Girona came into the season more as an underdog than a contender for European cups. The Catalonia-based team was already making waves last year, battling with Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna for a spot in the top seven, but the pace slacked off towards late spring. Now though, they're showing their grit and currently sit second in the league, sandwiched between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Over the weekend, the white-and-red squad bulldozed over Mallorca at home, securing their fifth consecutive win in La Liga (5:3). Girona now boasts not only as one of the most entertaining teams this season, but the highest scoring too, with a tally of 16 goals - nine of which came from the last two matches.
Villarreal claimed seven wins in the last 11 meetings, while Girona triumphed four times. Last season, both matches saw the hosts prevail: 1:0 and 1:2.
Villarreal's season start has been disappointingly lacklustre, and the constant manager shake-ups aren't doing the team's morale any good, for sure. Conversely, Girona aren't under considerable pressure and have been consistently delivering high-scoring games without suffering a single defeat over six rounds. Given the current form of both sides, it seems wise to bet on Girona not losing.
Villarreal's average goal concession stands at 2 per game, while Girona racks up 2.5 goals per match. Placing a bet on Girona's ITO (Individual Total Over) 1 appears promising.
Hosts will likely have to seize the initiative and crack open Girona's stout defense while the white-and-reds pose a threat on the counter. Therefore, it would be a good call to bet on a TO (Total Over) 8.5 for corners.
Neither team is infamous for rough play - the referee is unlikely to distribute more than 3.5 yellow cards.
My bet goes to a final score of 1:2 in favour of Girona.
