On Tuesday, 23rd April, as part of the semi-final second leg of the Italian Cup, Lazio will host Juventus on their home turf. Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic provided the Bianconeri with a comfortable advantage following the first meeting, so the Eagles need to win by at least two goals.
Lazio: Mandas; Marusic, Patric, Romagnoli, Gila; Kamada, Vecino, Alberto; Anderson, Castellanos, Pedro.
Juventus: Perin; Gatti, Bremer, Danilo; Cambiaso, McKennie, Locatelli, Rabiot, Kostic; Vlahovic, Chiesa.
The match will be held in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico.
Lazio, holders of the 2019 Italian Cup, are in a difficult position: the Biancocelesti lost the first leg of the current edition's semi-final to Juventus (2:0) and now they need to win by at least two goals to progress. In the previous rounds, the Romans utilised the support of their tifosi and defeated Genoa (1:0) and Roma (1:0). In Serie A, Lazio are currently 7th in the league table, and it will be difficult for the team to break into the next Champions League campaign (three points off the top five, having played two games more).
After the appointment of Igor Tudor to the coaching bridge during the international break in March, the Lazio squad have won three and suffered only one defeat. Having lost in the derby with Roma, the home side won 1:0 against Juventus, 4:1 against Salernitana, and 0:1 against Genoa last Friday. It should be noted that Lazio have only won three out of their last seven home matches in all competitions, yet in five of their last nine matches at the Stadio Olimpico, the Eagles have managed to keep a clean sheet.
After triumphing in the 2021 Italian Cup and losing in the 2022 final, Juventus is hoping to claim its 15th title in this competition. Having overcome Lazio (2:0) in the first semi-final leg thanks to goals from Chiesa and Vlahovic, the Bianconeri have every chance to secure their ticket to the next round. In the previous stages, Max Allegri's charges comfortably dealt with Salernitana (6:1) and Frosinone (4:0) at home.
In the league, things are not going well for the Old Lady: in the last two rounds of Serie A, the visitors shared points with Torino and Cagliari, presently sitting only third in the league table, five points behind higher sitting Milan. However, Allegri's outfit has almost certainly secured their place in the Champions League, hence it makes sense to throw all their efforts into the Italian Cup. Juventus have been performing horribly away from home since the beginning of February and have failed to triumph in any of their last six away games.
In the league, Lazio lost to Juventus in Turin (3:1), then took revenge at home (1:0). Only in one of the last five head-to-head matches played in Rome, did the Bianconeri come out on top.
Lazio face an incredibly tough task - to overturn a two-goal deficit against Juventus, a team always renowned for being proficient at defending a necessary result. Of course, the hosts have looked good in recent matches, but the staffing losses of the Eagles can't help but affect the variability of the capital team's attack. The Italian Cup remains Juventus' only chance to claim a trophy in the current campaign, so my pick is for a draw in regulation time.
Juventus will not force the tempo and will preserve the necessary advantage. Only in one of the last four head-to-head matches between these teams have more than two goals been scored, so I'm backing a total under 2.5 goals.
Lazio need to fight back, which means the Eagles will try to seize the initiative right from the start. My bet would be a home win on corners with a handicap of 0.
In the last six head-to-head confrontations, these teams earned at least four cautions combined - it will be the same this time.
I'm going for an exact score of 0:1 in favour of Juventus.
