On Sunday, 25th February, within the framework of the 26th round of the Italian Serie A, Juventus will host Frosinone on their ground. The Turin club has managed to amass only two points in the last four matches of the championship while the visitors lost their third consecutive match last week, conceding goals from all and sundry.
Long-time rivals with Inter for the Scudetto, Juventus is experiencing a serious dip, which has all but nullified the bianconeri's hopes for the title. The 'Old Lady' still holds the 2nd position in Serie A, but, with one game in hand, they're lagging 9 points behind the leading nerazzurri. They also have a nine-point buffer from the fifth-placed team, essentially guaranteeing them a Champions League ticket. That said, the hosts have not won any of their last 4 Serie A matches (2 draws and 2 losses). After defeats to Inter (1:0) and Udinese (0:1), the zebras last weekend drew with Verona (2:2): Dusan Vlahovic converted a penalty and Adrien Rabiot celebrated his 199th match for the club with a goal.
In the immediate future, the Turin club will face clashes with Napoli, Atalanta and Lazio in the domestic cup, so Allegri's charges need urgently to restore their reputation. Juventus' squad still lacks defender De Sciglio, Perin and Moise Kean. This is reinforced by the injury of key defender Danilo; not to mention long-term suspensions of midfielders Pogba and Fagioli. Dusan Vlahovic (13 goals and 3 assists) returned to the pitch last weekend after a minor injury and scored instantly – the Serb is sure to lead the line again this time. This winter, the 'old lady' signed defender Thiago Djalo (Lille) and promising attacking midfielder Carlos Alcaraz (Southampton), but both players are currently on the bench.
Since returning to Serie A, Frosinone has logically been battling to maintain its elite status. At the moment, the team holds the 15th position in the league table and is 3 points from the relegation zone. In recent weeks, the canaries have sharply decelerated: in the last 12 rounds, they've only won against sinking Cagliari (3:1), drew twice and lost 9 times. Thus, Frosinone suffered 3 consecutive losses: from Milan (2:3), Fiorentina (5:1) and Roma last weekend (0:3). Since the beginning of December, the yellow-blue team has lost the most matches in the Italian championship (nine, along with Salernitana) and conceded the most goals (31). Fans will like the following fact even less: Frosinone is the worst Serie A team in terms of performances away from home (only 3 points gained in 12 matches).
Frosinone's line-up this weekend is still weakened by personnel losses: defenders Bonifazi, Marchizza and Oyono, new signing Gedjmis, as well as Kalaj, Lusuardi (defenders) and Kuni (forward) are injured. Key defender Romagnoli has returned from suspension and midfielder Barrenechea and forward Sule (10 goals and 2 assists), loaned from Juventus, will be responsible for creativity in attack. Luca Garritano could also enter the field, as could the recovered Nadir Zortea. During the January transfer window, the canaries strengthened with defenders Bonifazi (Bologna) and Valeri (Cremonese), along with forward Seko (Torino).
Frosinone not only lost the last five direct encounters with Juve but also all nine of the most recent matches against the Serie A top two. The first-round duel ended with a 1:2 victory for the Turin outfit.
Failing to win in the last 4 rounds, Juventus craves to redeem itself in front of its fans. There's hardly a better way to do this than with Frosinone's visit to Turin. The "Canaries" are in crisis and have lost three matches in a row, and their away form is downright horrid. I expect no sensation here and back a convincing victory for the favourite with -1,5 handicap.
