On Sunday, 14th January, as part of the 21st round of the Premier League, Everton will host Aston Villa in their home ground. The Lions started the calendar year off with a 1:0 win over Middlesbrough in the third round of the FA cup, whilst the Toffees drew a goalless stalemate against Crystal Palace and are preparing for the replay.
Everton: Pickford; Coleman, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Harrison, Doucoure, Onana, Garner, Danjuma; Calvert-Lewin.
Aston Villa: Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Moreno; McGinn, Luiz, Kamara, Bailey; Diaby, Watkins
During the international break in November, Everton suffered a loss of 10 points for breaching financial fair play rules, and but for this sanction, they would currently sit in 12th place overall. Yet, the Toffees occupy the 17th spot in the Premier League table, with 1 game to spare and 1 point ahead of the relegation zone. Having demonstrated a good series of results under Sean Dyche, they lost their momentum in the last three rounds, suffering defeats at the hands of Tottenham (2:1), Manchester City (1:3) and Wolverhampton (3:0). Last weekend, Everton drew a stalemate with Crystal Palace (0:0) in the 1/32 finals of the FA Cup and are preparing for a rematch of this round upcoming Wednesday, hosted on their home ground. Under Dyche's management, the hosts have never endured four consecutive defeats in the Premier League, however, the Liverpudlians have been unable to best the teams starting the tour in the top six of the table in the last nine matches.
Everton's experienced defender Ashley Young and former England midfielder Dele Alli are still absent through injuries. Additionally, midfielder Idrissa Gueye is unavailable due to his participation in AFCON with Senegal. Lastly, the participation of midfielder Doucoure (6 goals) is in doubt due to injury, whilst forward Calvert-Lewin (3 goals) is disqualified after receiving a red card in the FA Cup - in his absence, Beto (1 goal) will fill in for him at the attack's helm. Dwight McNeil was carried off the field with an ankle injury last weekend, but Sean Dyche later confirmed that the winger had avoided serious injury and was in good spirits, implying that Danjuma may take his place in a worst-case scenario.
Aston Villa, being one of the most vibrant teams of the first half of the current English season, occupies the 2nd spot in the Premier League table. The Birminghams are eyeing a place in the Champions League next autumn (they lead the 5th place by 3 points) and could even dream of the title (they are also 3 points behind the leading Liverpool). The Blue and Claret broke an impressive streak of 7 winless matches (5 wins and 2 draws), right after Christmas, losing against Manchester United – despite having a two-goal advantage in the first half (3:2). In the last tour, the visitors redeemed themselves in front of fans with a 3:2 victory over Burnley, and last weekend, Aston Villa defeated Middlesbrough in the 1/32 finals of the FA Cup (0:1) – Matty Cash’s accurate shot on the 87th minute sealed the fate of the match.
Having topped their group in the UEFA Conference League, Unai Emery's men have moved straight into the 1/8 finals. Aston Villa will be missing left back Digne, experienced stars Mings and Buendia, Olsen, and Bertrand Traore. The participation of centre-back Pau Torres and midfielder Tielemans in the match is under question. Unai Emery rotated his team in the FA Cup, but should return his key players to the starting lineup on Sunday. This primarily pertains to Ollie Watkins (9 goals and 8 assists), who is the guests' main offensive threat. Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby will take their places on the flanks, whereas McGinn and Kamara will anchor the midfield.
Aston Villa’s five-game winning streak against Everton was broken in the Carabao Cup match in September, where the Toffees secured a 1:2 victory in West Midlands.
Aston Villa has been in astonishing form in the first half of the season and seriously aims for a Champions League slot finish. In contrast, Everton has been far from successful on their home turf, having accrued only 10 points in 10 matches at Goodison Park. I struggle to see how the Toffees can triumph here, so I'm placing my bet on an outright victory for the visitors with a 0 handicap.
Unai Emery's team has scored at least twice in each of their last four away Premier League matches. Given the crisis Everton has been embroiled in over the last weeks, it's safer to bet on Aston Villa's individual total of over 1.5 goals.
