Today within the 11th round of the APL, Tottenham will host Chelsea at their home grounds. Spurs maintained their leadership in the league standings a week ago after defeating Crystal Palace 2:1 while the Blues dealt with Blackburn 2:0 in the middle of the week and advanced to the quarterfinals of the League Cup.
Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogi; Sarr, Bissuma; Kulusevski, Maddison, Johnson; Son.
Chelsea: Sanchez; Disasi, Silva, Badiashile, Colwill; Fernandez, Kaisedo, Gallagher; Palmer, Jackson, Sterling.
The match will take place in London at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
This season, Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou's management is making a strong impression. The London team has yet to lose in the championship (8 victories and 2 draws) and was leading ahead of the start of the 11th round in the Premier League with a 2-point lead over the closest chasers. At the end of September, Spurs had to struggle to get a draw in the derby with Arsenal (2:2). Since then, the hosts have won against Liverpool (2:1), Luton (0:1), Fulham (2:0) and Crystal Palace a week ago (1:2). After a scoreless first half, Joel Ward unfortunately redirected the ball into his own net, which was followed by Son Hyun Min increasing the advantage of the Whites. Thus, Postecoglou will seek to become the third head coach in Premier League history to go the first 11 rounds undefeated, after Frank Clarke and Maurizio Sarri. Having scored twice in each of the four home victories in the current campaign and conceded only two goals, Tottenham will also aim for a fifth straight victory for the first time since December 2018.
We should note injuries to wingers Solomon and Perisic, as well as reserve players - goalkeeper Utman and left-back Sessegnon. Also, the return of the key left defender Udogi is not guaranteed. Uruguayan midfielder Bentancur, who has been missing since the start of the season, was in the squad against Crystal Palace. New Spurs' captain Hyun-Min Son (8 goals) is unstoppable at the start of the campaign, and he will be supported in attack by summer newcomer Maddison (3 goals and 5 assists). Brennan Johnson and Richarlison will also compete for the vacant spot after Kane's departure.
Despite a high-end squad and the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as coach in the summer, Chelsea have not managed to get back to their previous level this season. The Blues currently hold a disappointing 12th place in the Premier League standings, trailing the 'big four' by 10 points. In October, the visitors showed some improvement in form, going 3 matches unbeaten (2 victories and 1 draw). Unfortunately, last weekend the London giants stumbled again, losing unexpectedly to Brentford with a score of 0:2 due to accurate strikes from Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo. The Blues can take solace in the fact that in their last three away Premier League matches, they have taken seven points.
This week, the Blues defeated Blackburn in the 8th round of the League Cup (2:0) - Benoa Badiashile and Raheem Sterling distinguished themselves. On Monday, Chelsea still won't be able to count on a number of key players. Among them - summer newcomers Lavia (Southampton) and Nkunku (Leipzig), Fofana, Chilwell and Modric, promising midfielder Chukwuemeka and Chaloba. Also, participation of Bettinelli and Albanian forward Broja is still uncertain. Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who had a rest last weekend, performed very well in the League Cup this week. The attacking trio will be composed of Palmer (2 goals and 1 assist), Sterling (3 goals), and Jackson (2 goals). Axel Disasi may take the right-back place, and Badiashile - in the centre of defence along with experienced Thiago Silva.
Chelsea's February visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ended in a 2:0 defeat - a few months after a 2:2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Of course, it would be very dramatic if it is indeed Pochettino who puts an end to Tottenham's unbeaten streak on Monday evening. However, it is hard to believe this outcome: Spurs are currently on a roll, literally sweeping almost all opponents in their path. The Londoners have collected only 12 points in 10 opening rounds and conceded without a chance half a year ago on the same arena to their ancient rival. My prediction is a win for the home team with a handicap of 0.
