On Sunday, 16 June, Slovenia faces Denmark in the first round of the Euro 2024 group stage. Matjaž Kek's side has yet to secure a victory in the continental finals, while the Danes aim to replicate their success from three years ago.
The match will be held at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart.
Slovenia shone in the qualifying tournament, finishing 2nd in their group with the same points as Denmark (the Scandinavians had a better goal difference). Throughout the qualifiers, the Tricolours suffered only two losses – to Denmark (2:1) and Finland (2:0). Fans are ecstatic over the impressive performance, consisting of 7 wins and 1 draw. Remarkably, the team will participate in their first Euros since 2000.
In November last year, Matjaž Kek's protégés defeated Kazakhstan (2:1) and then the USA (0:1) in friendly matches. Surprisingly, in March, the nominal hosts lost to Malta but soon compensated with a victory over Portugal (2:0). Before the tournament, Slovenia defeated Armenia (2:1) in June, but last week could not overcome a relatively weak Bulgaria (1:1). In the first half, Despodov and Sporar exchanged goals, with a goalless second half disappointing the audience.
Semi-finalists of the last European Championship in England (where the English won 2:1), Denmark disappointed at the World Cup in Qatar, failing to advance past the group stage and finishing last in their group after France, Australia, and Tunisia. Having won the continental championship once in 1992 in Sweden, like their upcoming opponents, the Danes also lost twice in the qualifiers, in Kazakhstan (3:2) and in the final round to Northern Ireland (2:0), but it did not prevent them from topping the group.
In March, Kasper Hjulmand's team had a goalless draw against Switzerland, then deservedly won over the Faroe Islands (2:0). The white and reds began preparations for the tournament in June with a victory over Sweden (2:1), followed by another win last week against Norway (3:1). In the first half, Hojbjerg and Vestergaard scored, with Erling Haaland’s goal responded to by Yussuf Poulsen in the 90th minute.
These teams were placed in the same group during the qualifiers, and Denmark took 4 out of 6 points from the two matches, winning at home (2:1) and drawing away (1:1). Overall, Denmark has never lost to Slovenia (5 wins, 1 draw) in all competitions.
Both teams aim to make it to the playoffs, so the result of their face-off will be crucial in the battle for the second spot in Group C (which also includes England). However, the Danes, as last year's Euros semi-finalists, are eager to redeem themselves for their World Cup fiasco in Qatar. Given Denmark's historical unbeaten record against Slovenia, I stake on a victory for the nominal guests.
The last three encounters between these teams ended with both scoring. Given the presence of prominent attacking stars (Hojlund and Sesko) in both squads, it makes sense to bet on "both teams to score" this Sunday.
The Danes have a physically imposing squad and averaged more than five corners per match during the qualifiers. I stake on a victory for the white and reds in terms of corners.
In the last two meetings, these teams accumulated only two yellow cards total, so confidently bet on a total under 3.5.
I'll bet on the exact score being 1:2 in favour of Denmark.
