On Tuesday March 5, as part of the Champions League round of 16 return match, Real Sociedad will take on Paris Saint Germain (PSG) on their home ground. The French reigning champions clinched a victory three weeks ago with a two-goal advantage, while the Bask side seems to be in a slump, suffering three consecutive losses.
Real Sociedad: Remiro; Traore, Zubeldia, Le Normand, Galan; Mendez, Zubimendi, Merino; Kubo, Silva, Oyarzabal.
PSG: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Hernandez, Mendes; Zaire-Emery, Ugarte, Vitinha; Dembele, Mbappe, Barcola.
The clash will take place in San Sebastian at the Reale Arena.
Real Sociedad had a brilliant first half performance at Parc des Princes three weeks ago but didn't manage to turn their game dominance into goals. In the second half, the Basque team was punished for waste in front of goal, conceding two, which practically eliminates them from the race. Moreover, the white-blue side has been in crisis since the beginning of winter: recently they lost 1:3 to Villarreal at home, got eliminated by Mallorca on penalties in Copa del Rey semi-final, and last Saturday they surrendered to Sevilla (2:3 in Andalusia). Thus, the team has no more than one win out of their last nine matches in all competitions and isn't even within top six of La Liga (7th place).
In the first match, PSG did the bulk of the work surviving the first 45 minutes, while in the second half they confidently won with a score of 2:0. Of course, Parisians understand that the ticket to the quarterfinal is far from being signed off, as their recent failures in the main continental championship impact players' morale. However, Luis Enrique's disciples have reason for optimism: they are experiencing no problems in the domestic league and are at the top of the standings with a 9-point lead from the closest pursuers, Brest.
Nevertheless, having won three games in a row (Strasbourg, Lille and Nantes), PSG in the last two tours settled for draws against Rennes (1:1) and Monaco last Friday (0:0). In the duel against Monegasques, Mbappé was substituted at halftime highlighting tensions between Luis Enrique and the star striker who is leaving the club at the end of the season.
The match three weeks ago ended in a 2:0 victory for the Parisians.
PSG hasn't reached the Champions League quarter-finals for three years now and will try to avoid another flop in the second leg of the round of 16. The visitors have a decent advantage after the first leg and will play on counterattacks, while the Basques will be satisfied only with a victory. However, given their current form and the number of injuries, the hosts can hardly expect to thrash Parisians. I predict PSG not to lose.
Sociedad is facing immense attacking difficulties, while the French will not rush the game events and will focus on solid defence. Thus, I think it's safe to say the total goals will be Under 3.
PSG enjoys swift forwards and will regularly threaten the hosts' goal on counterattacks. My bet is on the visitors' Individual Total Over (ITO) corners, more than 2.5 in the second half.
Neither team is famous for its rough play (only 2 yellow cards were shown in the first match). I bet on the total cautions to be Under 3.5.
My bet is on the exact score of 1:0 in favour of PSG
