The regular Continental Hockey League Tournament 2023/2024. The concluding match on Monday will be an intriguing contest from the early 90's Russian championship beginnings: Dinamo from Moscow faces off against Lada from Togliatti.
Dinamo, a team that's fallen back of late, started the season strongly, even topping the Western Conference table at one point. But after losing 1:7 to Torpedo, things began to unravel. Dinamo lost their attacking flair and reverted to a subpar defensive style which saw them criticised last season. Currently, Dinamo is trying to recover from their slump, registering two consecutive wins, albeit in tough style in strenuous matches. They defeated Sibir 2:1 before overcoming Severstal 3:2 in extra time. Following this drop, Dinamo has climbed back to fourth place. After 20 matches, they have 27 points. They've achieved this through nine standard time wins, four additional time wins, and one defeat in additional time. Dinamo lost the remaining six matches. When it comes to goals scored, Dinamo ranks fifth in their conference, alongside their Minsk colleagues. However, they sit fourth in terms of goals conceded. So, for now, Dinamo is a mid-table team in the West.
The biggest surprise of the tournament's beginning, Lada of Togliatti returned to the KHL. Initially, it appeared their roster at most would fight for play-off participation, and the first three matches proved this. Many wrote off the team. However, Lada regrouped and began collecting points in each match, which eventually led them to 2nd place in the Eastern Conference standings. Lada kept accumulating points until a Far East trip, facing four defeats in four matches. Lada achieved three wins in a four-match home stretch after their losing streak, climbing back up to 3rd place in the East. Only the real powerhouses of the conference, Metallurg and AK Bars, are ahead. Interestingly, Lada finally moved into a positive scoring difference at 1. They have conceded only 45 goals, placing third in the East.
Dinamo and Lada have competed against each other in 10 matches. However, all these encounters happened before Lada's KHL return. The victories were shared evenly: Lada won five matches, with Dinamo claiming the other five.
Despite all the positives said about Lada, Pinnacle still sees Dinamo from Moscow as the favourite in this encounter, offering odds of 1.47 on their win while the odds for a Lada victory are 3.25. Taking the Moscow side's victory looks the smart bet. Firstly, they're playing at home. Secondly, Dinamo is evidently on a good run, and judging by the squad and style of play, they seem superior to Lada this season.
