In the final match of the regular season day of the VTB United Basketball League, Moscow's "CSKA" and Krasnoyarsk's "Yenisei" will go head to head.
Despite unsatisfactory outcomes, Emil Rajkovic was granted another season at the club. The team was left by Alexey Shved and Nikola Milutinov. Notable acquisitions include former Fenerbahçe player Tonye Jekiri, Nikita Mikhailovsky and Melo Trimble. In their first match of the season, the army men narrowly defeated Moscow MBA (76:72).
In the next five matches, the army team won 8 victories, defeating Yenisei (73:64), Zenit (76:80), Parma (77:76), Avtodor (73:85), Minsk (112:84), Astana (96:66), Uralmash (73:86) and Samara (94:76) in turn. The only stumble in the first part of the tournament was suffered in a match against the last year's finalists, Krasnodar's "Lokomotiv-Kuban" (88:91).
After that, the army men once again gathered speed and won five victories in a row over league newcomer Runa (74:80), Kazan’s UNICS (66:79), Pari-NN (72:74), Astana (78:112), Yenisei (75:80), Zenit (104:89) and "Avtodor" (96:66). Only Parma of Perm managed to spoil the end of the 2023 season (82:78). In the first five matches of 2024, the army men won four victories. At the start of the internal championship, the top-6 army team conceded to Perm’s Parma (84:80), Zenit (81:71) and UNICS (78:84). However, they managed to correct the situation in the next matches thanks to victories over Lokomotiv (82:96) and Parma (96:72)
The team underwent a substantial rehaul for the 2023-2024 season. In addition to a new head coach in the form of Jovica Arsic, the club welcomed foreign players such as Jeremiah Martin, Mikael Hopkins, Bo Beach and Xavier Rathan-Mayes. The Russian core of the team was also completely updated. Promising players Pavel Lobarev, Vladimir Karpenko (on loan) and Andrey Toptunov replaced Vladislav Trushkin, Timofey Gerasimov and Alexander Gudumak.
T
he start of the season proved less than ideal for the Siberian team: two defeats on the road from CSKA (73:64) and Samara (83:63).
However, this was followed by a four-match winning streak, broken only by St. Petersburg’s Zenit (80:77). They managed to get back on the winning path thanks to a home victory over Perm's "Parma" (92:84). Following this, "Yenisei" managed to defeat two Moscow teams: MBA (80:85) and Runa (77:92). The winning streak was only broken by last season's champion - Kazan's UNICS (91:80). At the end of November-beginning of December, Krasnoyarsk are struggling to find balance: a victory over "Astana" (96:92) was followed by a loss to Uralmas" (76:73).
December was started with victories over Samara (103:82) and Minsk (74:89) and losses from season leaders - CSKA (75:80) and Krasnodar Lokomotiv (90:83). The year was capped off with a victory over the crisis-ridden PARI-NN (61:82). In the first matches of this calendar year, Krasnoyarsk lost in a shootout match to Moscow's MBA (91:93) and Perm's Parma (87:81) and defeated Kazan's "UNICS" (94:80), "Runa" (89:82), and "Uralmash" (88:76). At the top-6 stage, the club has not yet managed to achieve any victories.
In their latest encounter, CSKA emerged as the victors (75:80).
The army team has picked up excellent momentum and has maintained their top position on the chart. The team's game has been greatly bolstered by Olivier Hanlan, and the loss of Casper Ware doesn't seem as critical as it did at the start of the top-6 stage. I believe the hosts will emerge as the confident victors today and will maintain their leadership in the chart alongside Kazan's UNICS.
